Rangers, SEALs, Special Forces are all Special Operations units, but the “Special Forces” is the United States Army Special Forces, the “green berets”, which is a nick name for them.

I think the media is erasing their name and making it a generic term.

In this case the media is going even farther as the riot police is nothing like any of what you listed and does not have any of the relevant skills.

Don't know how OMON units have evolved see the Soviet break up.

In the latter days of the USSR and red bloc eastern European nations OMON units were more like the old terror Cheka.

Polish friends who emmigrated during the upheavals said they acted as agent provocateurs as well as targeting opposition leaders for severe back alley beat downs as well as outright assassinations. Steroid and meth use was administered by OMON command. I was told that more than a few had to be taken down by their own teams for running totally out of controll.
