Former Texas governor Rick Perry has a message for three of the current Republican White House hopefuls: Run for governor before you run for president. Speaking about Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Rand Paul, all three U.S. senators, Perry said in an interview last week with THE WEEKLY STANDARD that he's hearing from GOP voters that they want executive experience.
"Ive had more than one individual say, 'You know what, if you want to be the president of the United States, you ought to go back to your home state and be the governor and get that executive experience before you go lead this country,'" said Perry.
The former governor calls the senators "Marco, Ted, and Rand," and made sure to say he has "great respect" for the trio. "They are smart as a tree full of owls," said Perry, "These guys are very, very capable United States senators."
Earlier in the day, Perry had addressed the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in Oklahoma City. The Texas Republican seemed to have Paul, who had just completed a filibuster on the Senate floor to block the renewal of the NSA's wiretapping program, on his mind during the speech. "Leadership's not just a speech on the Senate floor, it's a record of action," he told the crowd. Perry later denied in his interview with TWS that the statement was a specific shot at Paul.
Perry, who ran unsuccessfully for the GOP nomination for president in 2012, left office in January of this year after more than 14 years as Texas governor. He will likely announce a second presidential bid on June 4 near Dallas.

Maybe he meant they should go home and run for uh......uh.......uh.........governor.
Wow!
I thought Rick Perry had curled up in the corner and died!
Who knew he was still alive?
It really is weird how the Governors(Walker, Huckabee, and now Perry) in this race, want to tell the Senators in this race that they shouldn’t be running, and yet, the Senators are just fine with the Governors running.
Seems some people are a little lacking a little in self-confidence!
Perry is not ready for the big show and I don’t think he ever will be.
BTW- He does realize Senators are also elected state-wide, right??
Yeah- more snark then substance from all quarters recently—
Perry wouldn’t get within 30 points of Ted Cruz in Texas.
Can’t blame Perry for trying. But sorry Rick, Ted is going to kick your tail again, just as he creamed your boy Dewhurst three years ago!
If Perry thinks that he ought to be President, then he needs to tell us why instead of trying to introduce a new qualification outside of the Constitutional requirements.
I would be reluctant to vote for him both because of his performance in 2012 and because he approved giving in-state tuition to illegals.
Ted Cruz is my man. Regarding Perry’s issue, Cruz has broad state governmental executive experience. More important for me, I think that Cruz is correct on every issue as to which he has expressed an opinion that I have found.
Governors have no better track record than senators at being president.
There have been very bad of both... Obama - senator, Carter - governor...
They do have something else in common though...
Ah yes.
The elderly version of Rubio looking to humiliate himself again. Who is bank rolling this eGOP retread?
lol
Heartless dude, just heartless
:p
I think Rick Perry thought last time that he could have a mulligan round, and then come back at it down the road for a real round. Apparently, he was wrong. His mulligan round is what is remembered, and I don’t think he’s getting a 2nd chance.
Perry is a lying P.O.S.
He tried to shove TTR down our throats.
Had one re-election commercial where he stood on the bank of the Rio Grande, in Carhart and Stetson, and promised he would stop the wetbacks with the NG.
A real P.O.S.
“Perry is not ready for the big show and I dont think he ever will be.”
Perry will make a decent SecDef.
`Do you really want someone that looks America in the face and says Hillary was a great SOS, to govern you or be any part of those governing you?
Thats the only question that actually needs to be asked. Forget all his other idiocies and abandonments. Do you want a man with that poor judgement in a position of power?
I didn’t care for him as ad executive Jim Cutler on Mad Men.
An open borders fraud as Sec of Defense ? Whut ? Let him go run a Dairy Queen.
