Obama Usurps Local Police With Fake “Ban” on Militarization

The New American
25 May 2015

After having drastically accelerated the militarization of local police forces by the federal government, Obama is now having second thoughts about it — or so the administration and the establishment press would have you believe based on widely reported “de-militarization” edicts issued last week. But while the decrees were framed by virtually all of the establishment media as reining in federal programs that provide military gear to law enforcement, the real agenda, as usual, is about empowering Washington, D.C. — in this case, to exert even more control over local police departments across America. Indeed, much of the military gear can still be obtained from the feds, as long as officers are first subjected to more federal “training” programs and police departments submit to new “national policing standards” across the board. The new rules fit well with the broader agenda of nationalizing law enforcement and other key sectors.

The latest round of police-related demands from the White House was unveiled as a supposed response to militarized police in Ferguson, Missouri. After local law enforcement there was blasted by Obama and others last year for its military-style show of force in handling rioters and demonstrators bankrolled by billionaire Obama ally George Soros, the administration pledged to act. Race-mongers and leftists seized the opportunity to promote more “fundamental transformation” of America. Baltimore poured fuel on the fire. And so, according to media reports, Obama’s latest executive actions involved giving his approval for the recommendations laid out by the “President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing,” a multi-agency body that he created by decree to examine law enforcement issues. The outfit recommended national “standards” for police, and much more.

Hmmm...

Obama does something right for once. He bans the FEDS from giving (some, too few) military weapons to local cops. And then gets blamed for trying to “nationalize” the police.

Yeah, that commie probably would like a Gestapo. But, this is a step in the other direction.

Obama always appeals to the stupid and there is no one dumber than those who know better but buy his BS anyway.

Local people can prevent the “militarization” of their police if they aren’t too stupid and lazy to do so.

There is a little town in south western Michigan that had an out of control police department (Berrien springs maybe). The police chief had all kinds of military grade equipment and was using it with regularity. Not to mention the fact that he had more than 200 people deputized in a township of less than 2000 people.

Finally the locals got fed up and the township council stripped the chief of his toys and fake cops. The chief quit soon after.

IMHO Obama wanted to militarize the police so he could use them to his advantage. When he figured out a lot of police and Sheriff departments would not march lock and step with him he decided to rein it in.

Searchable database of what police departments in Michigan have. Looks like my county got 1 armored truck worth $65,070.

Looking at what police departments in Michigan are getting I’d have to say that the term “militarization” is being thrown around awfully loosely.

Offensive weapons are pretty minimal for most police departments. For instance Ann Arbor got 35 pairs of ballistic goggles. The city of Oakland Michigan on the other hand got 302 5.56 MM rifles, 71 7.62 MM rifles, a tracked armored personnel carrier just for starters.

The article is somewhat hypeish, but the crux of it is pretty easy to understand.

All that military gear is STILL AVAILABLE to local police. They just now have to jump through more Federal-level hoops to get it. Those hoops involve training by the Feds and adoption of Federal policing standards.

Which, assuming that the article is accurate, is definitely a step - several steps in fact - in the wrong direction. If the local cops are going to have that equipment, I’d much rather have them have some level of autonomy over it. Rather than having been trained, and having the standards in place, to surrender their authority and submit when the Feds show up.

Which is, actually, where this article falls apart I think. I know a number of local cops from different departments across the US who have been to Federal training. They’re generally amazed at the “toys” they get to play with - at least the ones without prior military service are - but otherwise think it’s a lot of BS. The consensus seems to be to go to the training as a punched-ticket thing, not to rock the boat, stand out, or otherwise call attention to themselves or their specific department.

IOW the local cops are both smarter and more resistant to the BS than the Feds give them credit for.

A lot (The majority) of the “military equipment” they’re getting is purely defensive or even lifesaving medical equipment that just happened to come from military sources.

Looks like my hometown fire and rescue got a portable defibrillator.

Øbongo only wanted to militarize the po-po against those dastardly TEA partiers. Ol jug-ears wasn’t bright enough to recognize the likelihood that all that gear would be put to use against his homies.

wasn’t it cops that he accused the republicans of starving during the debate on his flaccid stimulus? Seemed like retarded old joe biden even accused us of aiding rapists.

all seems sort of ironic now.

Wow! On 3 counts:

1. The State uses a Bridge card to buy the weapons (LOL! it’s a joke, son)

2. Taking the usual route, our counties just got rifles.

3. My next “my” county got nothing..zip, nada. I’m taking that as a good sign. No night-vision gear, as my current county got.

Did you notice how much (over a million bucks worth!) Birch Run, with about 5 officers got?? Must be planning a riot at the outlet mall. Ridiculous!

It says Detroit got 2 helicopters.

I have to wonder who made that decision since Chief Craig has complained that the one they already had is sitting in storage unused.

The question is what does he envision as the end game for this "step in the right direction".

True. And I’m actually a big supporter of handing out military surplus to localities, having grown up in an age when local PDs, FDs and Civil Defense orgs were peppered with WWII/Korean War surplus vehicles up to and including DUKWs and Halftracks. Even one Sherman recovery vehicle.

MRAPs and M113s do make for good heavy rescue vehicles. But that has to be the mentality for their use. Not as a way to make the cops feel like they’re paramilitary.

As to what this article presents, again if it’s accurate, it strikes me that the Federal gvt has gotten localities hooked on surplus, and is now laying down conditions for them getting more. First one is always free, right?
