WASHINGTON >> For three election cycles, American Crossroads, the brainchild of Karl Rove and other leading Republican strategists, has been among the most powerful forces in national politics, a shadow party that has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising, data and opposition research to help elect candidates.
But in the early days of the 2016 presidential campaign, Crossroads among the first outside groups to fully exploit the Supreme Courts Citizens United decision unleashing wealthy donors and corporations has been buffeted by a rapidly changing political landscape that is testing its pre-eminence, and potentially its survival.
The nonprofit arm of Crossroads is facing an IRS review that could eviscerate its fundraising. Data projects nurtured by Rove are being supplanted in Republican circles by a more successful initiative funded by the Koch political network, which has leapfrogged the Crossroads organizations in size and reach.
And the group faces intense competition for donors from a new wave of super PACs that are being set up by backers of the leading Republican candidates for president, who are unwilling to defer to Roves authority or cede strategic and fundraising pre-eminence to the organizations he helped start.

Then he and LaTourette's group teamed up to "crush" conservative candidates all across the country.
I welcome the decline of Rove and his worthless, moderate-loving cabal!
How did Rove do in 2014?
Rove is an overrated architect of failure. His compromising on social issues has resulted in squeaker presidential victories where landslides should have occurred. Al Gore and John Kerry are anthropoid jokes. Bush II should have overwhelmed both of them. I wish him all the misery his middle of the road pandering merits - which is a lot.
AC is been nothing but a blood sucking vampire on the GOP body politic. They’ve vacuumed up millions and millions in consulting fees from weak but well-heeled candidates and delivered nothing. They should be seen for the frauds they are and shunned as charlatans and grifters.
As long as the rubes in politics keep writing checks (and they will, don't doubt it), I don't think Rove gives one damn about the outcome. He's a mercenary of the worst kind.
He managed to keep a seat in Mississippi from going conservative by working with the Democrats.
RINOS yesterday!
RINOS NOW!!!!!!
RINOS TOMORROW!!!!!
RINOS FOREVER!!!!!!!
RINOS, RINOS, RINOS, RINOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“How did Rove do in 2014?”
Rove and his ilk knew 2014 was shaping up to be a wave year, and they were fearful that a number of conservatives would be swept into power. So he successfully got the most moderate candidates nominated across the country (Tillis, Rounds, Daines, Gardner, etc). AND he and LaTourette saw to it that any challengers to incumbents were defeated, or supported spoilers to water down the conservative vote so moderates or incumbents would win.
Yes, you could say that Rove was successful in 2014. And the current Congress is the result, passing one Obama agenda item after another, with duplicity and glee!
Karl Rove can ESAD as far as I am concerned. He is the enemy of conservatism as much as any Democrat.
