Because Mount St. Helens spewed a LOT of volcanic ash into the air, the result was a couple of years of way above rainfall in California because the cooler temperatures from the ash in the upper atmosphere changed the winter jet stream patterns.

Then, eleven years later, Mount Pinatubo exploded putting even more ash in the atmosphere from an even larger explosion. Like Mount St. Helens, it was in a populated region. The two eruptions along with recent articles on Yellowstone brought volcano hazards to the front of our minds.

I was stationed at Travis on 26 Oct 1980, my first active duty assignment. I came to hate the place because it was always cold, windy and the winter rains seemed to never end. (Love the Bay Area though, some great times were had there)
