June 2, 2010: Wisconsin adopts Common Core State Standards

“MADISON — State Superintendent Tony Evers formally adopted the newly released Common Core State Standards for English language arts and mathematics today for Wisconsin.

“Wisconsin is ready to make the Common Core State Standards its academic standards for curriculum, instruction, and assessment,” Evers said. “These standards are aligned with college and career expectations, will ensure academic consistency throughout the state and across other states that adopt them, and have been benchmarked against international standards from high - performing countries.”

Evers exercised his authority under Article X of the Wisconsin Constitution to adopt the standards. Adoption by the state superintendent is referenced in the state’s Race to the Top application which was sent to the U.S. Department of Education on Tuesday....”

January 3, 2011 - Walker assumes Office of Governor of Wisconsin.

Oct. 3, 2012: Judge strikes down law giving Walker new powers in setting DPI rules”Madison - A portion of a law giving Gov. Scott Walker veto powers over rules written by the state schools superintendent was struck down Tuesday by a Dane County judge, the latest in a series of legal skirmishes between the GOP governor and public employee unions.

In the case, parents of students and members of the Wisconsin Education Association Council and Madison Teachers Inc. challenged the law approved last year giving Walker the power to veto administrative rules written by any state agency.

In the decision issued Tuesday, Circuit Judge Amy Smith ruled that the law violated the state constitution by giving Walker that power over the state Department of Public Instruction, which is headed by state schools Superintendent Tony Evers.”.....

July 17, 2014: Gov. Scott Walker calls for Legislature to repeal Common Core standards”Madison — Republican Gov. Scott Walker said Thursday he wants Wisconsin to repeal the Common Core education standards it has adopted along with most other states, making his strongest statement on the issue yet. “Today, I call on the members of the state Legislature to pass a bill in early January to repeal Common Core and replace it with standards set by people in Wisconsin,” Walker said in a written statement.”...

February 3, 2015: Walker proposal would virtually upend education status quo”Gov. Scott Walker’s budget proposes no significant increase for public school funding, but would allow more opportunities for students to use public money to attend private, religious schools or charter schools outside traditional districts...”

February 19, 2015: Court rules against measure letting Scott Walker halt school administrative rules “Madison — A unanimous state appeals court on Thursday deemed unconstitutional a portion of a 2011 law that gave Gov. Scott Walker the ability to halt administrative rules by state schools Superintendent Tony Evers, who is independently elected.

The ruling by the Madison-based District 4 Court of Appeals upholds a 2012 decision by Dane County Circuit Judge Amy Smith.....

..... Sherman was joined by Judges Brian Blanchard and Paul Lundsten. Their ruling, which took more than two years to render, upholds the 2012 decision by Smith that blocked the law from applying to the Department of Public Instruction. The new process for writing administrative rules remains in effect for other state agencies.

In appealing the decision, Walker had argued those who sued didn’t have legal standing. But the appeals court found they had grounds to bring their case as taxpayers.

Walker also argued the change in how rules are written did not strip away any of Evers’ powers when it came to public instruction. The appeals court disagreed because the 2011 law would have granted the governor veto power over administrative rules related to schools.”....

February 2, 2015:Gov. Walker Proposes Bold Education Budget

Jan 23, 2015: Wisconsin Public Radio: Wisconsin’s Superintendent Responds To Walker’s Teacher Licensing Proposal “Governor Walker wants to change teacher licensing requirements in Wisconsin to, according to the Governor, create “alternative pathways to allow a candidate with real life experience to pass a competency test to gain a teacher license.”

This announcement came yesterday as part of the Governor’s workforce readiness plan and will be included in the two year budget proposal expected in early February.

The measure has already been criticized by the Department of Public Instruction and comes after State Superintendent Tony Evers warned on Wednesday of this week that what he calls “divisive mandates” on public education were on their way.”

“Wisconsin public schools are not required to adopt the Common Core standards, but the state Department of Public Instruction says all have done so for English and math except for Germantown. State-mandated standardized tests are tied to the standards.”

Not that anyone with kids in public schools will give a damn, since they unable to comprehend just what those schools are about, but I do find it interesting that ONLY ONE TOWN in the entire state sees a problem with Common Core, only one town - even after all of the kicking and screaming, and not just from conservatives.

To me, that tells me who runs the schools - but WHO CARES - THEY ARE FREE, and I really need the money I save to buy that really big truck, or boat...

Not forcing school districts to adopt common core is not at all the same thing as “banning” common core.

Legislature to address Common Core today. We should remember how hard one of the GOP legislators worked to keep this from coming to a vote.
