(Reuters) - Retailer Target Corp has informed top suppliers of packaged foods, such at Kraft Foods Group Inc, that it plans to put less money into promoting their products in favor of fresher, healthier foods, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal said the Minneapolis-based department store chain informed several suppliers, including Kraft, General Mills Inc, Campbell Soup Co, Kellogg Co and others of the plan earlier this year.
That means canned soup, cornflakes, boxed macaroni and cheese and other packaged, processed foods will get less optimal shelf space and promotional signage in its grocery aisles in favor of items such as fancy sauces and oils and granola, the people told the journal.
The move is designed to reflect the changing tastes of Americans looking for healthier options, the report said.
Target representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.

When your customers are waddling down the aisle then you know you need to stop selling food that includes ingredients that are feed to cattle to fatten them up.
I hope this works but two things - target’s produce has never been very good so it’s not a place we’d think of going for produce — and several attempts of restaurants and stores to sell healthy chow have been rejected by consumers. We will see. Oh yeah, we won’t shop at target until they take the locks off their shopping cars so they can roll thru their da@@ed parking lot. It’s very difficult having to walk back and forth a dozen times between their stalled out shopping cart and your car carrying your groceries in your two hands
Depends on the store. I would guess that the one closest to me has a grocery department which is maybe 15% of the store.
About the same as the nearest Super Wal*Mart, perhaps a bit more.
I know people who do all of their shopping at either store, so definitely large enough to have all they need.
The only time mrs riverdawg ventures into the food section at Target is while she is shopping there for some other reason. Target is never her “go to” destination for food of any sort.
I read that Dollar General is toying with the idea of fresh veggies and and meat.
