A 16-year-old girl has been gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park while posing for a picture near the animal.
The National Park Service says the unidentified girl's injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
The agency described her as an exchange student from Taiwan who was visiting the park with her host family.
The incident occurred shortly after noon Friday in the Old Faithful area.
The Park Service says she and others were between 3 and 6 feet from the bison when she turned her back to the bison to have her picture taken. The bison took a couple steps and gored her.
The girl was airlifted to an area hospital.
The Park Service advises visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from bison in the park.

Haven’t ever white water rafted the Snake, but we did in Alaska. The water temperature was just above freezing and poured over the edge of the raft. We had to wear wetsuits and I felt like I was packing sausage just trying to get mine on!:)
Enjoyed hearing about the great-uncle. What a gorgeous place to have a ranch! And being in a Posse! That’s as Old West as it gets! Thanks for sharing.
He headed west after being stood up at the altar and the family didn’t hear from him for forty years. His first winter there he couldn’t get out of the cabin and he swore he was leaving come spring, but spent the rest of his life there. We have a chair he made out of elk antlers and elk leather webbing, and a huge set of antlers.
That is a great story. I can’t imagine having something one of my ancestors made with his own hands, especially something so unique. I hope he kept a journal or somehow recorded his experiences. So neat!
If I ever win the lottery, Jackson Hole will be my home for at least part of the year.
You practically have to win the lottery to afford anything there now, especially along Spring Creek. I’ve always wanted to fish Alaska, but I don’t think I’m in good enough shape to do it anymore. My wife wants to take me on a cruse there but I would want to fish.
I’ll bet if you go out with a guide you’ll do fine. They offer all kinds of excursions. There is so much to do and see there. Whale watching is fun. Many times we watch them from the ship pulling out of port.
Skagway is my favorite port city. The Red Onion Saloon is a bit of history that is eye opening. I found out that Skagway had electricity before New York City! By all means treat yourself and your wife to that cruise. You will Love It! We’ve done it several times and will do it again.
My wife and I have to Yellowstone five times in the last ten years and a few other parks with buffalo like Custer State Park S.D. and Wind Cave Nat. Park. There must have been about five times we’ve had to stop our car as a herd of buffalo passed around us. No problems so far. But we sure don’t get out of the car to pet them as they go by.
Thanks, I may just reconsider now that my wife has retired. It seems like we have so many plans now, 4 grandkids between 4 and 7, just bought a 36’ 5th wheel RV, and plans to travel. A cruise might make a nice change.
Had a wild elephant chase us while we were on a safari in tiger country in South India. True story.
We were in a 4WD and were mighty glad the tusker gave up after a few yards.
I keep hearing that Yellowstone is incredible, and I’m sure that’s true- but sharing it with hordes of idiots would kill the whole experience for me. I used to live in some really beautiful very wild country in extreme northern California, and the lack of roving packs of imbeciles was a good part of the appeal.
I grew up there. There weren’t any warning signs in eighteen different languages posted anywhere. It didn’t have to be explained to me that wild animals deserve a healthy dose of respect and are not to be approached or petted. It was kind of a common-sense thing, like not sitting down to lunch in the middle of the highway.
Sounds like you have a lot to look forward to. Congratulations to your wife on her retirement. I retired recently, too, and really look forward to each day.
Keep me posted if you book that cruise!:)
God Bless!
