Interesting, but seems like a canard. It does not explain how a projectile caused the train to speed up. The engineer was not unconscious as he applied the emergency break.

And I thought I was the only one wondering why all the buzz about a rock.....when the real question is why the increase in speed and application of emergency brake???All railroad men KNOW you don’t emergency brake going into a turn......the front brakes first and the momentum from the rest of the train pushes the leading cars off the rails........
Someone has already mentioned the “hacking” possibility. I thought that the engineer just screwed up and accelerated 25 MPH instead of slowing 25 MPH. Shortly before they reached the curve, the train was going 75 MPH. He should have slowed 25 MPH to the 50 MPH limit for that curve. Instead he speeded up 25 MPH to 100 MPH.
