U.S. commandos mounted a rare raid into eastern Syria overnight, killing a senior Islamic State commander in a firefight, capturing his wife and rescuing a Yazidi woman held as a slave, the Pentagon said Saturday.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced the raid, identifying the militant as Abu Sayyaf. He said no U.S. forces were killed or injured in the operation.
A U.S.-led coalition has been striking Islamic State militants in Syria since last year, but this is only the second time troops have carried out a ground raid. A previous operation was aimed at rescuing Americans held hostage by the group.
Syrian state media earlier reported that Syrian government forces killed at least 40 IS fighters, including a senior commander in charge of oil fields, in an attack Saturday on the country's largest oil field - held by IS.
It identified the commander as Abu al-Teem al-Saudi. The name indicates he was a Saudi citizen.

How do liberals justify this seeming anomaly?
Obviously, you have not been "keeping up with the KHORASANS"!
First thing I thought as well. Boots on the ground in Syria?
Well it looks like we’re on the ground there risking American lives in order to protect some Muslims from other Muslims (none of which give a damn about us and would rather see our throats slit).
What a noble cause.
Ha!
Killing ISIS leaders is something we should be doing more of.
That wife in the photo is tooooooo funny! :-)
Neither. If it were SEALs one of them would already be on TV. Think "Quiet Professionals".
Why? This is protecting Muslims from other Muslims.
Why is this our job?
You haven't heard the news about ISIS slaughtering Christians and blowing up churches?
They are mostly killing other Muslims.
We’re not over there saving Christians.
We’re over there propping up yet another dictator and we’re involving our military in a sectarian religious war that has nothing to do with us (and which has been going on for 1,000 years)
Army Delta forces like to fly below the radar as do Marine Special Ops. Navy SEAL units need to lower their profile, good for recruiting, but it lowers operational effectiveness.
So you think it was wrong of America to take out this Abu Sayyaf guy?
ROFLMAO! I see what you did there. Very funny. Thanks.
Yer killin me. :-)
Yes because this is not our fight. Some country from the region should have taken him out.
Why do none of the people in the region never have skin in the game? Why do we end up doing all their scut work for them (at great risk to our military people)?
Let them take the risks themselves and kill their own extremists.
How many terrorist attacks on American soil would it take before you change your mind?
We should defend against terrorist attacks on our own soil including but not limited to not importing millions of Muslims to our land.
Was this Sayaf person planning such an attack? Let’s see the evidence.
Assad never persecuted the Syrian Christians. Most Syrian Christians support Assad. Syria has a long history of Christians. ISIS is killing Christians and everybody else who isn’t ISIS. ISIS needs to go not Assad.
