Don’t expect NSA surveillance to end anytime soon

On Thursday a federal appeals court ruled that the NSA’s wholesale collection of Americans’ phone and Internet communications actually is not authorized by the controversial USA Patriot Act, as current and prior administrations have argued.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal:

The ruling greatly increases the pressure on Congress to make significant changes—or end outright—the surveillance program. The judges not only ruled against the phone program, but sharply criticized many of the legal theories upon which the U.S. government has built out its surveillance capabilities since the 2001 terror attacks.

The Obama and Bush White Houses have used the Patriot Act, in part, to task the nation’s top spy agency with collection of nearly every phone call made in the U.S., and then entering that information into a database to search for possible contacts among potential terrorists. The NSA program gathers metadata involving records of which numbers are called, what time they are called, and how long those calls last, but not the actual contents of the conversations.

But both administrations have also justified the data collection under a president’s Article 2, Sect. II powers as commander-in-chief of the armed forces. More on that in a moment.

The entire federal government is above the laws and out of control.

If they weren’t, so many people on the Right wouldn’t be upset.

It’s the whole point.

True. In the scheme of everything, this isn’t a big one, but just take the fact that Congress exempted itself from a law which it passed-CommieCare. There is no way they were ever supposed to be able to pass laws from which they are exempt. That was almost like the handwriting on the public wall that this government is lawless.

Wait. The court said the NSA had to stop didn’t it? How can they just disobey what the court said?

Well, I tell you what.. We need to get 32 states together, get them to agree to only conservative amendments, and add one about the NSA obeying the courts. That’ll stop them.

I'm always tempted to say that a handful of suicidal lunatics destroyed the greatest nation in history. But, the police state was coming anyway. It just happened faster than we could’ve imagined.

with the greatest of respect for those NSA workers who sincerely believe they are doing good for USA, they’re mistaken.

this spying on American citizens HAS TO END ASAP!

We are NOT a police state. Or rather, we ARE a police state but we are not supposed to be one.

Transfer the good NSA people to other jobs where they can really help America, complete their careers and pensions, and dismantle the spy system in what is supposed to be our Land of Liberty.

“Transfer the good NSA people to other jobs where they can really help America, complete their careers and pensions, and dismantle the spy system in what is supposed to be our Land of Liberty.”

Because somewhere in the Declaration & Constitution, allegedly “good people” should be forever coddled & hailed as heroes...

And the selfishness never stops...”Well, as soon as I get MINE, I’ll help change it”. Nice attitude.

The promise of America isn’t a lifetime of freebies, as long as you do the right thing later. How about doing the right thing NOW?

Shame on you.

Except they aren’t the only ones gathering info on the law-abiding.

Deflection isn’t attractive, nor a distraction from domestic traitors.
