Left Concerned Over Shaked as Justice Minister (Israeli left unhappy over new government)

The left was unhappy on Tuesday with the possibility that Jewish Home MK Ayelet Shaked would be appointed Justice Minister, hours after Jewish Home chairman Naftali Bennett delivered an ultimatum to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, demanding that Shaked be named justice minister or Jewish Home would go to the opposition.

Yariv Oppenheimer, head of the Peace Now organization, tweeted, "Shaked as Justice Minister is like placing an idol in the Temple. No less.”

MK Nachman Shai (Labor) also condemned the possible move, saying, "The demand to give Ayelet Shaked the Justice portfolio is like giving the Fire and Rescue Services to a pyromaniac."

The left was also unhappy with the fact that the Jewish Home would receive the Education Ministry. Former Meretz MK Yossi Sarid wrote, "I am disgusted just by thinking about the fact that the most radical nationalist mark in the government will be in charge of the education of our children and grandchildren. This thought is absolutely atrocious. The only question is how much damage Bennett will do. I hope that as little as possible."

Shouldn’t a Justice Minister be a lawyer?

The anti-Livni.

She’ll have her hands full taking on the entrenched leftist legal oligarchy in Israel.

I wish her success in her new post.

Lawyers make for the worst kind of politicians.

Netanyahu's concerned as well. He tried to seriously limit what she would control as Justice Minister. But he looked at the clock and folded.
