New England fishermen of important food species like cod and haddock say the looming cost of paying for at-sea monitors could put them out of business this year.
Officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service said the money it had been using to pay for the monitors trained workers who collect data on fishing trips will be needed for other obligations. That means groundfishermen who catch fish like cod, haddock and pollock in New England waters will likely have to start paying the cost around August.
The new expense is coming at a time when it could cripple the fishery, fishermen said. Paying for at-sea monitors can cost fishermen about $800 per trip, which can be nearly half the gross profit of a good haul, they said.

be a shame if those monitors got caught in the tackle and went overboard
and people wonder why “jobs flee the united states.”
“New England fishermen of important food species like cod and haddock say the looming cost of paying for at-sea monitors could put them out of business this year.”
That’s the goal. It always has been.

Something tells me this will put the small guys out of business while the big guys who make political contributions will clean up. In other words, cronyism strikes again.
Great news for China. ...
That's been going on in farming agribusiness for the past 20-30yrs. Profitable Family Farms will soon be extinct.

Bring back keel hauling and make it mandatory for any government regulator.
This is terrible, with ships at sea at the mercy of pirates, the Iranian and Chinese navies, and now cost of at-sea monsters... what's next!?
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service
Dang it...
I would think with a name as long as “National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service” I could see it in the Constitution, but for some reason I can’t find it.
Once again, this shows that I have an older version of the Constitution. Mine doesnt list raisin control, ketchup speed control, and others as one of the specific authorities given to the federal government.
Can someone point me to where I can download a latest version of the Constitution?
One that specifically authorizes (enumerates) federal government authority over such things as:
- the amount of water in my toilet bowl
- the type of light bulbs I use
- how fast ketchup should flow out of the bottle
- and also raisin control.
One more example of why all political donations should be ANONYMOUS. You can't sell influence if you don't know who is buying. Individuals and businesses should be able to support any candidate or party they wish in any amount they wish; that is FREEDOM. But pay-to-play is BRIBERY and a criminal act; it should be treated as such.
One benefit is that politicians will have to express their views on a variety of issues in order to encourage those who think the same way to donate.
Will some try to cheat? Sure. But a few frogmarched off in cuffs to federal prison will cure that!
This is another reason we need Cruz. He has worked to end regulations before and has promised he will as President. He knows that regulations are killing our businesses and jobs. I pray America will give him a chance.
It’s all about burning out the economy and making those surviving subservient to government.

Best to just read between the lines for what you seek. It’s all in there, in the white-space.
If $1600 is a good haul, the fisheries are doomed in any case.
“You have to allow our people to go out with you to ‘collect data’. Oh, and now you have to pay for it too!”
If they think they have the authority to do this, they should at least have to fund it themselves.
