A recent survey by UC-Berkeley's student assembly found that nearly half -- 47% -- of its Ph.D students were depressed, citing dismal job prospects. About 37% of its master's degree students also reported depression.
Even though the once-a-decade report only focused on Berkeley -- one of the most prestigious public universities in the country -- it could spark a wider discussion on the value of graduate education in America.
"The largest source of anxiety for me is my job outlook. It is tremendously uncertain and thus fear-inducing," one anonymous graduate student said in their survey response.
Job pessimism was the biggest difference between Ph.D and master's students.

ANYONE would become depressed living amidst so many of the most hard core liberals in the nation.

$300K in student loan debt and none of your customers wanna read your thesis in Wymyn's Studies. Yeah, you oughta feel down.
kind of a drag...
I’m thinking the real PhD students...physics, EE, Chemistry, Computer Science etc. folks aren’t depressed at all.
First, they are too busy with true academic challenges.
Second, the vast majority will have jobs waiting.
Third, they did not have to put up with quota token “professors” in the useless untrue trivia studies departments.
Those students do not look old enough to have earned their PHDs in the Depression?!?!
1A——Students should put maximum time and money into the fields of computers and electronics because.....
1B-——there is no way foreigners could take their jobs in those fields.
Atheism, cynicism and nihilism can get a tad depressing.
From my son’s experience at UPenn, a lot of the Chemistry Ph.D. students feel abused. Just one data point.
He “Mastered out” after a stressful interval. It’s a long story, but one problem was that his research called into question his prof’s approach to experiments which were chewing up the lab’s major grant money. It was an intellectually corrupt situation.
Those STEM jobs will go first to H1Bs, international students. That trend is just lately taking off.
When I was in graduate school, no one had heard of Barack Obama--in fact, he may not have been calling himself that yet.
When I was in graduate school, no one had heard of Barack Obama--in fact, he may not have been calling himself that yet.
Probably not all that uncommon.
My take on the old adage:
Those who can; do.
Those who can't; teach.
And those who can't even teach; get a Ph.D, and become a Prof, so they never even have to teach.
Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life - because that field isn’t hiring.
That looks like the making of a book. Just wish I was retired so I could write it.
That's because these silly little twits get worthless degrees in imbecilic subjects like "Women's Studies" and "Black History". Duah, Go figure.
BS = Bull S***
MS = More S***
PhD = Piled Higher and Deeper
“Do what you love and youll never work a day in your life”
Bingo
Phd was for pretty huge d1ck, i thought.
Still plenty of work for Engineering grads. Not so much for the Lesbian Bondage Studies majors.
