In a mock 2016 Presidential Election held by the Political Awareness Society (PAS) for ETBU, Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul tied for first place, as both candidates received 39 percent of the votes.
For the mock election, PAS set up an open booth on campus in which students and staff for ETBU could stop by to vote. A total of 328 voters contributed to the mock election.
According to PAS President Hunter Henson, the ballot consisted of a variety of possible candidates for the Democratic and Republican Parties.
We decided to have a large selection of candidates representing both parties to help familiarize the voters to the potential candidates, said Henson.
Following Cruz and Paul in the percentage of votes received was Donald Trump, receiving eight percent of the votes, Hillary Clinton with six percent, Scott Walker with five percent and three percent of the votes consisting of other candidates.
The primary function of PAS is to promote civic responsibility and spread political knowledge on the ETBU Campus. PAS conducts a variety of events each year such as voter registration drives and hosting local and international political leaders to speak at student-organized events.
Earlier this week, PAS hosted a candidates and issues forum in the Ornelas Student Center in which local politicians debated the latest Marshall ISD bond.
Henson believes PAS plays an important role in promoting political awareness on campus at ETBU and he wants students to become more indulged in politics.
It is important to have a political awareness society on campus because too many young people are not informed about the political process and its massive importance, said Henson. It is important they realize that everything in their lives is determined by politics, from the price they pay for gas to their future career prospects.
