I don’t think there was any name for it. I was born in 54 and had a neighbor kid who was Rain Man level autistic and no one knew at the time what his situation was.

Apparently it was referred to medically as childhood schizophrenia prior to the change in terminology to autism. At least that’s what I read somewhere today while reading some sites trying to sort out the actual increase in autism.
