That fact and her revelation should have been driven home with an added war drum beat for the last 20 years.

Unfortunately, only the 'sin' part of the equation was promoted. And that one sided argument with people who don't believe in sin doesn't work, won't work and will never work.

Tell an atheist(or Christian lite), hey its a sin, hey you are a kook.

Tell an atheist(or Christian lite), hey it is the cornerstone of Western civilization, at the very least you will get a pause.
