GOP congressional leaders are racing to approve a budget blueprint for the coming year that abides by strict spending limits, determined to show that the party can maintain fiscal discipline. But some rank-and-file Republicans are already expressing interest in a much bigger deal that would adjust those caps, sweep away the still-developing blueprint and ease the budgetary pressure on the Pentagon — and, grudgingly, domestic programs if necessary.

Never mind - I just finished reading the article.
The sad fact is that the Republicans have not really cared about balancing the budget in 20 years. 20 years — 1994. Since the late 90s and in the Compassionate Conservatism of Bush II and then into the modern party, its just not something they believe in.
That is just one of MANY sad facts about the Republicans, unfortunately. To your point, what on earth DO they believe in other than their own re-election?
The GOP has lost the conservative vote.
The last nail is in 5he coffin and it is being lowered into the hole, ready for burial.
This is one of N reasons (where N is very large and increasing) why the GOP is dead.
They should know that they will be treated much like the dim bulbs following the sure to come CW-II.
Spending money is easy, so almost everyone is for it. Balancing the budget is hard, so very few are really for it. So it is, so it will always be.
Shortly before the next election, the GOP will trot out its usual assortment of deceptive tricks to dupe its base into believing they stand for conservative principles. Its the same old tactics every election. Once elected, its right back to the status quo of more big government, more spending, and more erosion of our liberties. They are nothing more than snake oil salesmen but sadly there are many who will buy their elixir of lies.

And so is the quagmire of destructive debt. As the old saying goes, its a lot easier to get INTO things than it is to get OUT of them.
They got people angry about Benghazi, Obama’s “Executive Amnesty”, Obamacare and Mr. Gruber.
Gruber was like what happened in 1984 with “Emmanuel Goldstein” being projected on the screen by Big Brother and everyone yelling at it in a frenzy of rage.
The GOPe knows how to create fear and anger among grassroots voters to win elections so they can go to Washington and do nothing about the issues they claimed to care about.
Using Gruber as a scapegoat was a neat trick, an “emotional wedge” as Karl Rove would call it to suck in the grassroots.

It’s all about appearances while acting like crooks behind the scenes.
The GOP doesn’t spent taxpayers money, members of the House and Senate do. Evidently they think this is what taxpayers want.
