The Alawites, the Assad family's sect, have seen up to a third of their young men killed in the Syrian conflict and mothers are now refusing to send their sons to war
In the Assad regime's heartland, dead officers are sent home in ambulances, while the corpses of ordinary soldiers are returned in undecorated pick-up trucks.
Then come the press gangs: military recruiters raid houses to find replacements by force for the dwindling ranks of Syria's military.

The Alawite sect is kind of under fire from BOTH the Sunni and Shi’ite sects, as they are regarded as much too pacifist to properly represent Islam to the world, not being engaged in the worldwide jihad to subjugate or replace all religions that are not Islam.
Muslims are in far greater danger from other Muslims than from any non-Muslim source.
Until Islam reforms from within, and closes this schism within their ranks, next to recognize and respect the existence and legitimacy of the non-Muslim world, there shall not be peace in the Middle East. Or anywhere.
But of course, that is nonsense, so far as the Islamic “scholars” view the current conflict. Obviously, everybody else is “inferior” and deserve to be under the One True Way of Islam.
‘But from inside the community, the picture looks very different: as their sons die in droves on the front lines, and economic privileges subsidies and patronage cease, Alawites increasingly feel they are tools and not the beneficiaries of the regime.’
English propaganda in its classic form.
And the issue is?
Should Alewis drop supporting the government and join terrorists in burning Churches and killing Christians hoping to be killed last?
Last time I’ve check it isn’t proper time for someone to look for benefits in Syria. There are more serious things at stake.
They have no choice.
Another problem there, “all”, is it seems the Alawites are about 12.5% of the population, something like that. I hardly see how the elder Assad was able to seize power back in the ‘70s with those percentages.
The Alawites were poor and they became a warrior caste. Sorta like the Scotch-Irish here in USA.
