Say four simple letters, TTIP, to many Europeans and youre likely to be met with a blank stare.
But in Germany, where resistance to the proposed US-EU free trade pact or Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is fiercest, the response is likely to be a volley of angry words.
In fact, in the whole of Europe, perhaps only in Austria and Luxembourg is the interest and opposition likely to be of a similar magnitude, as a new round of talksthe ninth since last yearkicks off in New York on Monday.
According to a YouGov poll published at the end of March, 43 percent of Germans believe that the pact, which has the governments support, would be bad for their country, compared with 30 percent who see it as good.

Germany is seriously screwed as long as they attempt to keep the Euro together.
The “great experiment” of a unified currency has run its course.
They know it, their people know it.
Acquiescence is not in their nature, German Nationalism will not be denied. Been there, done that.
It’s only a matter of time.
Been there,
I admit I haven’t followed this debate but I recognize when an author has left out vital information. After touching on food, the author backs away and gives no more data on why all the opposition. I’ll wager this is a combination of the food Nazis and their definition of genetically modified as well as some good old fashioned protectionism. America tends to have huge, efficient farms that use insecticides, genetically enhanced crops and we aren’t nearly as socialized which makes the products much cheaper. Several years ago when America donated tons of grains to starving African countries the Europeans made it known that their financial aid would cease if the grains were distributed. The grain rotted in the ports and warehouses. People died but the Europeans were happy. These people are probably the European equivalent of the virulent greens here who want us all to die to save the planet.
It was set up to fail, and thus to provoke what you mentioned.
The euro was rammed down the throats of the populace; none of them wanted it.
Farming here is not as free-market as it once was. It’s pretty socialized thanks to subsidies, the USDA and the FDA.
And what year was that? Only goes to show how the US let the EU get out of control so rapidly. The EU was an abomination from its beginnings, and most likely was started by the Nazis that went underground.
The “EU” knows that if Greece bails then Italy and Spain can bail out of the Euro as well.
And fundamentally, why should they continue to support their weaker partners?
As I said, it’s only a matter of time.
They did that deliberately as well. How many people took note of the fact that every government in those countries had to fall before they would take the “bailout” loans?
When I said the food Nazis I didn’t mean actual Nazi party Nazis, though their views on food were about the same as the liberals of today. I meant the crazy sort of whole food, must be wholesome, no additive nuts. My sister was seeing a psychiatrist and he kept harping on her diet, providing her with lists of books and foods. He was so obsessed on the subject that she stopped seeing him as that was the only thing he talked about and could not let go of the subject. I read some of the stuff he was espousing and he was totally crazy.
The Europeans are way ahead in the organic, natural, sustainable, no preservatives you-must-eat-this-way-or-we’ll-kill-you philosophy.
Yes, I took note of that.
However, as you say here, there is an undeniable parallel, which does suggest a link at least to me, when you add the EU’s history to it.
No, yes !!!
It’s insanity.
One country after another giving up their sovereignty ?
Politicians convincing people that their future prosperity lies in a collective?
Sadly, it was an easy sell, but thankfully people are waking up to the devastation it causes on individual liberty.
IMHO, this is the War at hand.
The war between the Government and the Individual.
The founders knew that a government required state borders, representations, and the 2nd amendment.
But the “peace in our time” leftists leave the Mexican border wider open than interstate commerce without any checks and globalization means disarmament and UN arms treaties.
Go figure, they all think they know better.
