My uncle was the lead mechanic for TWA at the time. He happened to off that night. Obviously, he has followed this story and has a lot of information that I have never read or heard. He says that the theory that it was the fuel tank is baloney and that someday someone will talk. he believes it will be one of the Navy divers. He sent me an email a couple of years ago with much of the info he has collected and it’s pretty convincing. Can’t remember most of it.

that was during the clinton years. their reaction to all terrorist attacks was to deny them the mega phone I was watching TV during 9/11 after the first plane hit.
The story being spun was that a malfunctioning auto-pilot caused the plane to go off course and hit the building.
Then the second plane hit, and that story became defunct. If there had been just one plane hijacked, then it would have been spun as a autopilot glitch.

An El Al B-747, with Netanyahu on board, was due to depart JFK in front of TWA 800. They asked for a delay (not unusual in the day of INS) and pulled into a holding area. TWA 800 took off in El Als time slot. Any terrorists who base their plans on an airplane leaving on time has never flown into or out of New York City.

The navy divers were transitioned to Navspecdevgru COM (memory) the SEAL’s command, which is not part of the whistleblower protection law.
The ships were the USS Grasp and USS Grapple (memory) and there was a notification of command changed published at the time. ( in “Proceedings”?)
Lots of bases were covered to keep the info close. Just look at the lawsuit on the authors (names escape me) for analyzing the swatch of seat material, which BTW found rocket fuel).

I have no love for the Daily News. I prefer the Post. But this guy has no reason to come out now with all this info except for the fact that he's come across so much info that he really believes it.
And it's not such a stretch that he wants to protect people who would have a lot to lose by coming forward.
Personally, I have never believed any of the major conspiracy theories. This one doesn't seem too far-fetched.

agreed.
the double attack strategy was developed by terrorists in response to being denied the mega phone. they wait until the media is on scene to launch the second attack

Clinton didn’t want a war. He never thought he’d have to kill anybody in the job I guess. That’s why it was always a police action.
So much evidence it was a shoot down.
This war we are in now is so many years in the making.
To: AppyPappy
As I remember it being reported, there were over 200 witnesses. Many of whom were pilots and air crew.

They don't ground airplanes. Not without specific reason. An identified threat like a spark in the center fuel tank is not a specific reason? OK if you say so.

James Kallstrom was Assistant Director of the FBI in New York when he was appointed to lead the FBIs criminal investigation into the crash of TWA Flt. 800.
Initially the investigation centered on the missile theory.
About 5 days into the investigation Kallstrom was called down to Washington to consult with his superiors. He returned a couple of days later and at that point the investigation turned entirely to the exploding fuel tank theory. Any evidence to the contrary was ignored or covered up. The FBI meeting in Washington with administration (Clinton) was the turning point in the investigation.

I dont think they test missile systems on active flight paths. I could be wrong about that. IIRC, There was a naval exercise going on in the area at the time of the crash.

I had always thought Kallstrom was a straight shooter but his actions on this seemed out of character. That has been one of the sticking points for me. He didn’t and doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would have followed Clinton’s directives.

Pretty decent book about the subject. It is fiction but written in a very believable manner. The ending is a punch in the gut.

“2. If you rule out SAM that leaves a ship based system of the US Navy or an on-board bomb. Sailors are a loyal bunch, but they are Americans first. Had this been an accidental shoot, someone would have talked. Someone ALWAYS talks.”
I had people here on free republic assure me that (better put your coffee down if you value your computer equipment), if the commander ordered the crew not to talk about their vessel shooting down a commercial airliner, then the crew, being good sailors who always follow orders, would never, ever say a word.
It doesn’t help to talk rationally about TWA 800 or JFK, there are always those who prefer to believe the conspiracy theory of the day.
