I wandered all over the neighborhood when I was a kid. My folks had absolutely no idea where I was; as long as I was home by dark and didn’t bring the cops with me they didn’t care.

Me too. When I was eleven I had to walk a mile alone to catch a bus which took me to another town over 10 miles away. No problems, no danger and, yes, I felt very confident and secure with the whole process.

Me, too! Once shortly after we moved to Denver (I was in second grade) I decided I wanted to go to the movies on a Friday night...mother graciously decided to accompany me! But my older brother and I walked to school (1.5 miles or so) to school every day, back from school most days...other than the Hispanic bullies we encountered from time to time, no problemo.
