What is the approved distance for kids to play at a park on their own, and what do they do about kids on bikes, surely they get more than a few thousand feet from home sometimes.

I dunno. But back when I was 8 my cousin and I used to walk a couple of miles every day, all summer long, to the local college where there was a swimming pool. We’d swim and snorkel all day long and then walk back home... barefoot.
It was the same pool my dad used to train at when he was an instructor / member of the Police Dept’s diving team.
Times have changed.
