An Oregon lawmaker proposed legislation Monday creating uniform standards for hand dryers in public restrooms, citing the proliferation of powerful dryers that, while efficient, can sometimes trigger tinnitus or cause discomfort for people with development or sensory disabilities.
The measure would require all new or replacement dryers to operate at a noise level no louder than 84 decibels. According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that is about as loud as a school cafeteria. It also wouldnt allow hand dryers blowing air downwards to blow air faster than 115 mph, in case the hand-dryer manufacturer doesnt label the decibel level.
Bill sponsor Democratic Sen. Chris Edwards told the Senate Committee on Business and Transportation that the new generation of hand dryers used to elicit episodes in his autistic son, who would cry and cover his ears when he heard them.

It’s nice to know that Texas Republicans aren’t the only ones with a world class bland stupidity.
What would we do without big brother?
It isnt enough to obey him, you must love him.
No paper and no effective air dryers. I guess I’ll use my pants to dry my hands.
So retarded is the new Race that 99.9999999999999 of Americans must kowtow too?
What about people with sixteen toes, What special prize do they get?
Solution looking for a problem.
Hey, the throne is where my best reading gets done and my snappiest FR posts originate. I’m usually so engrossed in important things like hand dryer wind speed and decibels that I never even notice the aromas.
Worse than that is the terrible extremely low frequency electrical magnetic fields emitted from those bad hair driers. And, don’t forget. Hair driers use up lots of electricity, adding to the CO2 and global warming.
What is a progenitor of faulty genes doing in a state legislature?
Legislation brought to you by the paper towel lobby, no doubt. While they are at it, they may as well regulate vacuum cleaners out of their effectiveness too.
Uhh... the natural ability to count in hexadecimal?
Towels are silent. So are the back of my pants, which I generally use more often than those useless hand dryers.
The Dyson ones seem to work well, but most are about as useful as a fan.
That said, making a law based upon the needs of one person is silly.
Here’s a better idea. I’m very sorry the boy is autistic, but, if his condition causes him to freak out with certain frequencies, get him some earplugs rather than legislating away the noises.
Personally, I’m all for a field-effect Taser at the door for those that don’t wash their hands.
Fact is these new hand dryers are OBSCENELY too loud. Some louder than my Skill saw.
Bring back the GD paper towels and make restroom doors swing OUTWARD so you don’t have to grab the handle, ya know?
Bureaucrats & politicians designing restrooms...what could go wrong? (too late, but they should stick with it, as they do that better than everything else)

On the prior, let us not forget the ‘Portland Loo’...
I also find some of the newer style hand dryers, the ones that blow very high speed, to be very noisy. Like producing sound levels, especially when the air is blowing around your hands, that would require hearing protection if you were to be exposed to it for more than a couple minutes. I’m very careful of my hearing, already having tinnitus and not wanting to make it worse.
That’s not to say I think a law to regulate the things is needed, but yeah, I wish places would just consistently provide paper towels.
One big irony with these super-loud driers are all the OSHA regulations to protect employees from hearing-damaging noises at the workplace...
...but in many businesses there should be a requirement for hearing protection to go take a leak.
If government wants to get serious about a problem, how about a realistic air-turnover rate for men’s restrooms...
Seriously: Restaurants protect their customers from kitchen smells due to government regulations better than other businesses protect their employees & customers in their public restrooms.

Return to paper towels, bring back windows in restrooms and just remove the damned doors altogether so I don’t have to hold my breath while forcibly expelling my bladder. (I can’t be the only one)
