Why is a 73-year-old a cop..?

Could be a second job. Working on another pension perhaps.

If he shot the gun intending to use a taser, could be negligent homicide. The family will get a pay off settlement for sure though.

A reserve Tulsa County Sheriff's deputy, not a city PD cop.

Little consolation to the family of the deceased, but [being careful what I say here] this unfortunate guy is no doubt connected to the County Sheriff in some way... maybe golf or church buds with him, maybe donated to his campaign - County Sheriff is an elected position here...

Local media reports that Mr. Bates is a long-time "Insurance executive and reserve Sheriff's deputy", IOW an insurance agent by day, rides along sometimes on weekends, in this case watching the perimeter of an undercover purchase of a firearm from a known felon.

Withholding further comment just in case I happen to know someone who might know someone... small world y'know...

Obviously this guy is in a, uh, legal situation...
