Homeless shelters in Seattle, one of the nation's wealthiest cities, turn people away each night. Wait lists for low-income housing are years-long. Cars and tents serving as makeshift homes can be spotted all over Seattle and the rest of King County.
Across the U.S., more than a million Americans wound up in homeless shelters in 2013, according to the latest numbers from the Obama administration. Homelessness remains widespread, but in most places, it's been decreasing in recent years.
That's not the case in Seattle, which has seen its ranks of homeless surge over the past decade. More people are now homeless in Seattle than anywhere except New York City, Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Affordable housing is a big problem, says homeless veteran Gary Eyerly.
This is key. When I retired, I found myself priced out of Seattle, and I ended up moving 100 miles north to a little farming village near the Canadian border where the rents are reasonable.
Houselessness/apartmentlessness or homelessness?
Leftist paradise, kicking regular people in the nuts ever since invented.
You can buy a nice fixer upper in the historic village of Celoron, NY near Jamestown for the price of a car!
Most of those people are on some kind of disability or welfare, they could buy their own place if they wanted to do some work and remodel!
Oh Wait! They HAVE to live in a paradise because nothing less will do! I forgot....silly me....
It’d be interesting to see one of those “distribution-of-wealth” analyses for the Seattle-Puget Sound area, compared to the U.S. at large.
That being one of the most solidly left-wing regions in the nation.
What? They can’t just grab one of those plentiful $15 an hour minimum wage jobs?
The “homeless” are always attracted to handouts.
If Seattle is like other big cities there is plenty of affordable housing. Its just that because of leftist polices you risk your life living there.
“That’s not the case in Seattle, which has seen its ranks of homeless surge over the past decade.”
Bet some of them would work for $12/hour.
When I travel around Seattle at night when attending an event in the city, I rarely encounter problems.
The left is always complaining how conservatives are so stingy. Now they can demonstrate to us how to be so generous like they are.
98 inches of snow? That’s OK there are plenty of Southern Red States with low cost of living far less snow and no Bloomberg/Cumo/de Blasio
I really admire Seattle’s generous philanthropy toward the homeless. I hope its good citizens will not only continue their good works but will do even more for these unfortunate folks.
The homeless problem in downtown Seattle was bad when I lived near there in 2011. I imagine it’s much worse by now since the city leadership didn’t seem inclined to do anything about it.
I learned to love small town life, but I didn't love the humidity and the Georgia mosquito, which I refer to as the state bird.
I ended up moving back to western Washington, but to a little conservative Dutch farming village 100 miles north of Seattle.
Good if to many ‘Yankees’ head down there won’t be room for me when I retire and move back!
You win. If “homeless” people are congregating somewhere with a gloomy climate, it’s because the handouts make it worth their while.
I have lived in/near/around Seattle for around 35 years. Yes, it is a liberal paradise but it is also a great city.
One of the things I like to point out is that Washington state is an open carry state and it is also (by constitution) a must issue state. There is no training or classes required for a concealed carry permit. Just finger prints and background.
Now one would think, with liberal logic, that Seattle would have dead bodies all over the place. However anyone want to compare the murder rate by handgun between Seattle and Chicago or Detroit where they have rigid gun control?
Yeah.... that usually makes a point. You are a lot safer in Seattle than you are in Detroit or Chicago.
The point is a 30 year note on a 60k home would be like $300/mo.
The deadbeats could panhandle that. Hanging around Seattle moaning about “Homelessness” is a crock of crap.
I just found them affordable homes. If they’d prefer rural Texas or Louisiana, there’s cheep stuff there too.
all for less then a car payment.
