Scattered power outages hit the State Department, White House, U.S. Capitol and Justice Department Tuesday, news reports said.
Some power was reported restored after about 30 minutes but Pepco, the main utility, estimated on its website it could be Tuesday night or later Wednesday morning before power was back in some areas.
According to Reuters, a State Department announcement said the main building and others nearby were hit when electricity feeders went down.
The State Departments daily briefing was halted as a result of the power loss.
The U.S. Capitol was operating with a backup generator, according to a congressional aide cited by Reuters, which also reported some metro stations were running on emergency lighting.
