I wonder what would happen if these batteries discharged completely under load. Aluminum and Graphite are on the opposite side of the galvanic series, with a significant potential difference. In nature, aluminum is the anode and graphite is the cathode. Granted, under anodic control aluminum does tend to passivate. Passivation would increase the internal resistance of a battery.

Would like to see the patent when it is filed. Graphite is currently used as anodes in impressed current cathodic protection systems, whereas aluminum is used as a galvanic anode in offshore applications.
