Re: “Noel the Christmas Carol is short for Emmanuel (God with us) as the angels sang it to the shepherds about the Baby Jesus...
Noelle is the French version...”
My understanding is that “noel” IS French which can mean, “Christmas” or “Christmas season”, which may in turn be related to the Latin word, “natalis”, which means “birth.” It may also be a root of the French word, “nouvelles” which means “news.”
The English word, “nowel,” means an expression of or a shout of joy.
I’ve not heard that it was short for Emmanuel. You may be right, I’ve just not read that before.
Re: “. . .as the angels sang it to the shepherds about the Baby Jesus...”
Actually the Emmanuel passage is what the angel told to Joseph in his dream before he decided to marry Mary (Matthew 1:22-24). It wasn’t when the Angels visited the shepherds.
