Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery calls veteran 'enemy' during marijuana debate

The Maricopa County attorney is coming under fire for calling a veteran an "enemy" during a debate-- and he's not backing down from his words.

This all unfolded at a debate over legalizing marijuana last week hosted by the Tempe Republican Women.

Bill Montgomery told a veteran he had no respect for him after the vet asked for a meeting to discuss how medical marijuana has improved his life.

"With all due respect sir, your name calling, 'potheads' offends me,” said Don Ream during a Q & A portion of the debate.

Ream is a Vietnam veteran. He's been a medical marijuana patient for several years, and he told Montgomery he'd like to "educate him" on recreational use.

Montgomery argued against legalizing the drug in Arizona. It’s an issue that could come up on the November ballot in 2016.

When Ream admitted to smoking recreationally, Montgomery responded:

"I have no respect for you, for someone that tried to claim you served this country and took an oath to uphold the constitution and defend against all enemies foreign and domestic because you're an enemy,” he said.

The crowd booed back to him.

After the debate, Montgomery released this statement:

"Is [ream] an enemy like ISIS or Al Qaeda? Of course not. But if he or any other vet is going to use their status as a veteran to encourage people to break the law, then that does make them an enemy of our constitution and our laws and that is a sad commentary on where we are at."

Montgomery is a veteran himself. He's a West Point graduate who served in the Gulf War.

ABC15 wasn’t able to get a hold of Don Reams for a comment.

The Constitution has been abused all my life but soon it will begin to really matter then this dance will be over because it will require a king to undo this mess.

What happens if you'r wrong, and your children and grandchildren, and theirs live under an oppressive government because you wouldn't stand up, speak up, and do what needed to be done because you were waiting for a king to come and do it for you?

You miss the point entirely, the king has already come. If you deny that then nothing else in this discussion matters.

Not quite yet, but he will if we believe he does and there’s nothing we can do about it. I’m not getting on that bandwagon with you.

You are already on the bandwagon you need to figure a way to get the whole country off it.

Mike Lee's new book just came out and he explains how all three branches of the government has subverted the Constitution. He claims less than 1% of laws and regulations we are forced to obey actually come from Congress, the come from a host of alphabet agencies, that Congress lets live.

Bullshit.

Bullshit.

You avoid Mike Lee's assessment entirely because you know it is true. Waving a paper around that everyone ignores is not a winning strategy. As much as I admire Levin, his Article 5 movement is too little too late.

How can one possibly look at the "Iran Nuke" deal and not see how hopelessly irrelevant the Congress is.

There’s king obama and then there’s KING JESUS

Thing is, Jesus lets you pick whether to put your allegiance with Him. God would sooner let you go to a hell of your choosing than to snatch you away against your will.

I’ve lost track. Is this about Jesus, Obama, or Mike Lee reading my mind, being channeled through itsahoot?

It’s about a lot of stuff, but ultimately whether we like it or not, ultimate reality is about Jesus. He’s the King whether or not we want to deal with it.

Current reality is about Caesar, and we're supposed to take care of business. Ultimate reality will get here in it's own time.

God has this funny way of insisting on being called on, or else your efforts are in vain.

So what's the bottom line here? It's not going to work because I'm not doing it right, or it's just not going to work at all?

Do the best you know, but please don’t forget the Lord too. You don’t have to do it perfectly to get the Lord’s help, but forgetting the Lord’s help is like walking into a battle with popguns when you had an armory of howitzers.

The US Government has all the authority it needs under the Constitution to defend it's populace against dangerous chemical threats, of which Marijuana constitutes one of the lesser ones.

By that rationale, the Federal Government can regulate what you eat. Cholesterol is a dangerous chemical. So is Sodium Chloride. We are assured that limiting the ingestion of these is in the best interest of our personal and, thus, public health. (And the Government is working on this overreach)

I'm no fan of pot, I don't use it, but I have seen it benefit someone under Chemotherapy for cancer.

The problem with medical use is that of keeping the medical grade marijuana confined to medical use.

In reality, no where in the Constitution is it stated that the Federal Government has the authority granted to it to regulate what people consume, including food. That should fall to the States.
