Noting that the idea of equality was introduced as early as Genesis 2:5, with all due respect to Mr. Cook, he evidently doesn’t understand that 10th Amendment-protected state laws that protect religious freedom compliment Section 1 of the 14th Amendment.
14th Amendment, Section 1:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States [emphasis added]; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

In fact, state religious protection laws will help prevent Constitution-respecting states from unthinkingly violating the 14th Amendment like pro-gay activist states already have imo. Activist states are wrongly using equality policies to trump constitutionally enumerated freedom of religious expression in the name of protecting constitutionally unprotected gay “rights."

Religious freedom restoration act. Allows a person who asserts a burden as a claim or defense to obtain appropriate relief, including: (1) injunctive relief; (2) declaratory relief; (3) compensatory damages; and (4) recovery of court costs and reasonable attorney’s fees.
