As a child, photographer and editor Samra Habib lived within what she describes as the strict culture of surveillance of mainstream Islam.
But as she grew into her 20s, Habib began to question her sexuality as well as her own understanding of what it meant to be Muslim.
Theres a wide range of diversity that exists within Islam, she said. The conversations I would have with other queer Muslims, I realized this was a voice that wasnt being heard.
Inspired by her peers, many of whom attend Unity Mosque, a human positive mosque in Toronto, Canada, Habib decided to begin taking portraits of Muslim people who also identify as part of the LGBTQ community.

Try that diversity $hit in Mecca.
Any pics of the severed heads of little babies hitting the sand!...../sarc
More of the “noble savage” crap - a delusion whereby a liberal thinks that an uncivilized savage is really a cultured, dignified individual - just misunderstood.
queer muslims? i hope the photographer appreciates the freedom and security given by the west. her unity mosque is asking to be bombed by a terrorist.
They may not have known about when the constitution was ratified, but they certainly knew later. It’s why we sent marines to tripoli in the first overse as military action
The only place these creatures exist is in large, liberal Western cities. And the "Muslim" part is just another way to be different and rebel. If these queer Muslims went to the Middle East, they'd be tortured to death.
“Islam is a gutter religion. The religion of the ignorant, savages, miscreants.”
“I used to be Lew Alcindor, the pale reflection of what white America expected of me. Now Im Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the manifestation of my African history, culture and beliefs.”

You are absolutely right. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar poster child
for ignorance.
Is that a boy or a lady? I don’t know which. Frank Zappa “Bobby Brown”
Thirty or forty years ago this was unthinkable. In those days you would almost never meet a white convert to islam. And if you did, he was some kind of kook. Islam had no attraction for rational westerners. What changed? The rational part, for one.
I hate BBall. Loathe it. Yet my HS home room teacher and religion teacher at my Bronx Catholic HS insisted we go to a big game (he was a coach, Brother Christopher). Those who failed to show failed religion (required course). I went to the best big game v Power Memorial Academy. their star was some guy named Lew Alcindor. My school beat Alcindor’s team that night. I still hate basketball.
I think it may be a “woman”.....trying to imitate a man who sort of imitated a woman....
