PARIS As officials struggled Wednesday to explain why a jet with 150 people on board crashed in relatively clear skies, an investigator said evidence from a cockpit voice recorder indicated one pilot left the cockpit before the planes descent and was unable to get back in.

They don’t know. Could be both pilots were poisoned. Pilot one became ill and left hurriedly before a crew member could get in. Pilot two fearing terror blocked the lock then also succumbed.
Air crew tried but couldn’t get in.
Doesn’t explain the descent though.
Not a law. Just procedure. Someone has to visually check the door before opening for the returning pilot.
Don’t forget about investigating the rest of the crew. Suppose the one who may have temporarily replaced the pilot who left had terrorist/suicidal intentions, took out the pilot who remained, locked the cabin door, and intentionally flew the aircraft into the deck? This would require them to have A320 piloting knowledge I suppose. We live in very strange days indeed.
Controlled descent actually contradicts suicide or terrorism, unless the pilot in charge actually was aiming for a specific target. None was apparent. Lots of rocks and nothing else at the impact point.
Terrorism would usually involve the terrorist making a statement claiming a cause. The whole goal of a terrorist attack is to gain attention and an audience.
A suicidal person most likely would take the shortest route from 38K to the ground, not an 8 minute descent.
Drugs may be involved. The pilot in the cockpit scammed the other pilot out to take drugs unwitnessed. Could have been an OD or the pilot was just out of it. That scenario doesn't account for a controlled descent though.
There is also rampant speculation in the thread about the pilot in charge being disabled due to health issues. That happens but would be an exrtrordinary coincidence.
Just too little information right now
Flying while Muslim? Reminds me of EgyptAir Flight 990.

At that point, at 38,000 feet, wouldn’t the plane be on auto pilot?
If it was on auto pilot and remaining pilot in the CP had a heart attack why would he shut off the AP without the other pilot being in the cockpit?
I’d like to see the names of the crew and a those on the passenger manifest.
Normal routine is for a flight attendant to join the pilot flying on the flight deck while the other pilot is going to the bathroom.
No. All you need to know is this: One pilot locked out. Impossible for him to remain locked out even if the other was incapacitated. Suicide. By muzzie or otherwise. End of story.
It would be stranger if the rest of the FDR guts were still there and the flash RAM was the only thing missing.
You hit the nail on the head. Must have been an Amish first officer.
Unless this particular airplane wasn't set up that way...but it strains credulity that one of the pilots would leave the cockpit and then not be able to get back in by any means other than just relying on the co-pilot to open the door again.
Prayers for the victims, their families, local townspeople, and recovery workers...what a terrible thing to happen.
"The door can easily be opened from the outside without ANY action whatsoever from the inside. It's specificially designed this way of course for the incap situation.
"I have flown the A320 for three separate UK operators. NONE of these required a member of Cabin Crew present in the Flight Deck when a pilot leaves for physiological reasons. What would be the point? The ONLY case that requires a member of Cabin Crew to be present is when the CCTV is broken and hence a second pair of eyes is needed to look through the peep hole to verify entry when the other pilot is returning from his toilet break allowing the remaining pilot to stay in his seat flying the aircraft and monitoring the radio at all times."

And why put it into an off course decent?
Unfortunately, if the cause is speculated to be a medical issue, no pilot autopsy is possible here.
Even Malaysia Airlines revealed the names of the pilots right away..Germanwings won’t say their names, Im just assuming German Airlines, German Pilots
I just want to thank you for all of your insightful posts today. They have been very interesting to read and helpful as we try to grapple with this story.
Yup. Absolutely correct. Suicide. No doubt. Muzzie or Amish is the only question.

"That would be a non-issue, as long as they can match even one word with ATC comms. The rest could be easily sync'ed from that."
