agree...if that is the case they had some knowledge of the aircraft controls.

So makes perfect sense that if the pilot in the cockpit were having medical issues, he would turn around and lock the door so no one could get in. /sarcasm

Do the doors auto lock? I don't know.

BTW, the pilot could have locked the door, and then had a massive heart attack. In that case the pilot would be totally incompaciated.

They need to find or reveal what the flight controls were set at when the pilot exited the flight deck. Were they subsequently changed?

Restroom...I've seen the pilot leave the cockpit several times once the plane is at cruising altitude.

I was once standing in a line to use a restroom when a gentleman came passed us asking if he go ahead of us as he was the Captain and was needed in the cockpit as we were to be landing soon.

No one objected.

Have not read thru all the responses but isn't it standard procedure that if a pilot leaves the cockpit a flight attendant is in the cockpit until the absent pilot returns.
No pilot is left alone in control of the aircraft while in flight.

Amen. At the 9/11 Museum, you can hear the cell phone recordings from the passengers to their family, friends, and co-workers.

My Mom went there as well. She couldn’t even describe the feelings she had.

That one Brit could even have been a Moslem.

None of the three Brits onboard were Muslims.

One of them was just a few months old.

In 1983, I made a flight from Saint Louis to LA, while I was working the Harrier II program, to attend some meetings in Yuma, AZ. About an hour after the takeoff, 2 Mideast passengers joined a Mideast passenger in the seats in front of me. They began conversing in an unknown foreign language and at times acted to be intensely excited and speaking loudly. The passenger who was in front of me kept quieting them down and appeared to be the leader. When we reached California, they quit the discussions and I was somewhat relieved. They exited ahead of me and I lost sight of them when I changed planes to Yuma. Apparently they did not proceed with any actions. I bought a folding Buck stainless steel pocket knife and modified it so it could be quickly opened with thumb pressure on the side of the blade. I carried the knife on all flights I made up until 2002. I had found out it could pass through screening and detection while in Japan in 1986. They had the most intensive screening for flights I ever ran across. I am glad I never had to make use of it. I still have the original, along with a couple of newer modified versions, including one with my initials engraved that Buck Knife presented to me at a NRA convention in Dallas. I had showed my original to a Navy SEAL Team member and made him a copy. The SEAL Teams had Buck make modified versions for members.

Do personnel on these aircraft have any means of contacting ATC outside the flight deck? Were cell phones out of range?

No way am I boarding a plane with anyone from the Middle East.

Just curious what method you use to characterize the passengers. Does the airline let you look at a passenger list before boarding?

I travel a lot, but don’t see pilots come out all that much. But typically the access to the cockpit is blocked by the beverage cart while the door is opened.
