Visitors to the White House on Tuesday saw a side of the mansion that had previously been hidden from public view. The Old Family Dining Room, once a private space for first family meals, has been refurbished by Michelle Obama in her first major attempt to leave her mark on the interior of the historic house.
The dining room, used in recent decades as a staging area for State Dining Room events, has been thoroughly modernized. The works added to the room are bold, including a custom-made rug based on a 1950 weaving by Anni Albers. Most of the artists featured in the room lived in the last century, including Alma Thomas, a force in the Washington Color School and the first African-American woman to be included in the White House permanent collection.
Thomass piece, Resurrection, is reflective of her expressionist style, evoking a burst of color. The White House Historical Association acquired it at auction last year for $290,000. The association, founded Jacqueline Kennedy, also paid for the repainting of the walls, which are now a cool gray a major shift from the golden yellow that Kennedy selected.
The room is reflective of the Obamas tastes, which favor abstract artists. Two paintings by the 20th century modernist Josef Albers husband of Anni, whose work inspired the rug are featured across from a large mirror acquired during a 1902 restoration of the White House by the Roosevelt administration.
Obama unveiled the new room Tuesday by surprising visitors on public tours of the White House and encouraging them to look in on the refurbished space.

I will say the artist did a masterful job of upgrading her appearance.
Very observant of you! Very Jungian analysis, and spot on, IMHO. Both of the occupants are filled with irrational hatred and seething rage against white people ... and sadly, they are infecting their daughters with that same evil core which will consume them, too.
It is the ‘artwork’ which captures the eye and thus enters the soul of those who would sit in that room.
The painting by Iranian artist Farideh Lashai is on the wall in that photo. Christiane says it brings her “great joy”.
If she wanted to leave a mark, she should have just pissed on the wall, because that's what the redecoration looks like.
That’s closer to Bill and Hill style circa 1993.
hahah That is supposedly some ground breaking work by a female artist. That dedicated her life to painting after she retired in the sixties.
Jasper Johns is probably doing a facepalm at such ignorance by the reporter.
he painted this in 1955:
And the next occupant will redo it post haste. It’s awful.
Abstract Art, my hind end. This is Affirmative Action Artist displaying.
How is this setting a cozy, homey setting for dining with her children?
It is cold and fugly.
Yard sale chic.”””
GHETTO yard sale chic.... Fixed it.
Is that a bull’s eye on the wall down there? Don’t like the rug. The other painting isn’t so hot either.
I guess she’s no Jackie Kennedy.
It looks like every overpaid Hyde Park Democrats interior. Seriously, you need to go on a walking tour in Chicago’s Hyde Park when they have an open house. It’s all socialist junk art meant to make them look smart and sophisticated.
Not Hyde Park style at all.
