Yahoo Political Reporter: Cruz Talking About God-Given Rights Is 'Bizarre'

Meredith Shiner is currently a Yahoo News political reporter. Before spending three years at Roll Call, where she was considered "a leader in the newsroom," she toiled at the Politico for two years. Shiner is a graduate of Duke University, and "grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago."

I have provided these resume-level details to emphasize how utterly incomprehensible it is, as well as downright scary, that a woman with this kind of background and experience could have published, reacting to Ted Cruz's speech announcing his presidential candidacy, the following tweet (HT Instapundit):

Is a journalist who has worked at two of the leading DC-based online establishment press entities.

Graduated from an elite university's school of journalism.

Appears to have grown up in relatively privileged socioeconomic and educational circumstances. Despite all of this, clearly has no idea that our country's Founders, in one of the most important intellectual and political breakthroughs in human history, asserted in the Declaration of Independece that our rights, including but not limited to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, come from God — not kings, not tyrants, and not governments.

This isn’t bizarre to me at all, because the left has indoctrinated people to believe rights are man-made for quite some time now. You see, if man gave us our rights, then men can take them away, and that is exactly what the left wants to be able to do.

Maybe people should email the reporter and bring her up to speed (in a nice educational way)on some very basic information on how and why our Constitution was written.

She really may be that uneducated and ignorant on actual American history.
Likely a public school graduate; that information was never taught well in public schools.

Bizarre for a self-proclaimed journalist to talk about how rights come from the Constitution. Is she unaware that the Constitution followed directly from the Declaration of Independence with its clear statement that people “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights”?

Our rights can only come from God, or they are merely privileges granted or revoked at the whim of government, and we as parents have to make sure our children understand this. Otherwise it will become too easy for the successors of today’s totalitarians to enslave our children or grandchildren and gain the absolute power that motivates liberals and socialists.

It was secular, but not really in the modern sense of the word. Back then, secular was often used to simply mean things that weren’t directly governed by some church or spiritual authority, not things that were wholly separated from religion or religious ideas.

The King of England, for example, would have been seen as a secular position, even though he also was the “Defender of the Faith”, was required to be a Christian, and had to fulfill certain religious duties. The fact that he wasn’t appointed by any religious authority, and his activities were independent of them and not directed by them was enough to differentiate that position as “secular”.

I hope this question regarding God given rights vs. man given rights stays out front during this election.

IMHO, it is of prime importance to keep this question alive and make it very public. It puts liberal ignorance on display for everyone to see.

Say what you will about Glenn Beck, but when he was on Fox a number of years ago, he was smart enough to drill down to the root of the divide between liberals and conservatives. Beck went on a crusade to educate his audience about the history of our country founding and it came down to these words, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

We clearly have way to many people in our country that simply don't understand this concept.

I believe it's at the heart of the problems in America and certainly among liberals.

What is the source of the rights to life , liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

1. The Constitution
2. The will of the people
3. God

Meredith Wilson appears to be a moron. The notion of God-given rights is central to the Declaration of Independence, has been echoed throughout our history by most presidents, and was a central belief of Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. She must think that all those people were - like Obama - lying about their religious beliefs.
