Socialism ends up failing to keep its own promises because it has no genuine motive to do so. However in the process of pointing this out, Ayn manages to pan all “altruism” and this is a mistake. Charity should not be subsumed by Caesar, but it is not an evil thing of itself, quite the opposite, it helps society go.

I think you are somewhat mis-characterizing Rand's take on "altruism".
Her objection was the societal expectation that one should "sacrifice" for the good of others, and for the causes deemed "worthy" by society. In other words, once a society can "impose" an obligation on you to others, that leads down the path of serfdom.
Do you contribute to charity because it makes YOU feel good? No Problem. Do you take genuine pleasure in helping others, with no expectation of repayment? Fine.
I myself contribute both money and time to causes I find personally rewarding, and anonymously when possible.
