No, I was in very rural MO, far from anything resembling a city. From what I could see, it used to be cotton country, now it’s all given over to welfare and meth: no jobs, no hope, and no shame.

Used to hang out a lot in the Ozarks. From what I’ve seen in a fairly recent trip and from people I know who still live there, the area and people have gone way, way down in recent decades.

Very sad.

Rural and other poor white people are in many ways catching up to inner-city blacks in dysfunction, but nobody really cares, because they’re white. In fact, the more dysfunctional poor white people get, the happier I suspect some elites are. It reduces the average disparity between whites and blacks while leaving themselves and their own communities unimpacted.

I agree. There are still some decent folks, but they are a distinct minority in many areas. I don’t doubt the elites are happy—dependence and dysfunction are their raison d’être as they say. Can’t have masters without slaves...
