Rivlin begins marathon consultations [Israel Elections & Government]

President to begin consultations with parties Sunday, task one MK with coalition formation.

In an unprecedented measure, President Reuven Rivlin received special permission from Supreme Court Justice Salim Jourbran, Chairman of the Central Elections Committee, to begin consultations with delegations from the various party factions that will be represented in the 20th Knesset, prior to receiving official election results.

According to the law, any one of the 120 members of Knesset, regardless of their party rank, may be selected to build a coalition.

Although it currently appears as though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be endowed with the task, the jury is still out until Rivlin comes to a decision.

Consultations are expected to begin 10 a.m Sunday with the Likud, followed by the Zionist Union at 11 a.m. and the Joint Arab List thereafter.

At 2 p.m. the president will meet with Bayit Yehudi, which will be followed by Shas and United Torah Judaism.

Rivlan is the President of Israel and it's his job to choose one Knesset Member to form the government. Right now, it has been reported that one small party on Netanyahu's side of the fence is preventing Netanyahu from forming the government, because they want Netanyahu to renounce he his support for the TWO-STATE SOLUTION, but Netanyahu has been on the news after the election saying that he still supports that per his Bar-Ilan speech, given right after Obama got into office. Another small party won't support Netanyahu either, until they get the ministry positions they want. SO, there's a lot of wrangling still going on.

In addition to that President Rivlan has said that he wants to see a Unity Government with Herzog and Netanyahu in it. Herzog has said it's okay with him, and Netanyahu has, in the past, formed a Unity Government.

You really can't predict these things, so we'll just have to sit back and watch to see how it plays out!

One should keep in mind that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not abandoned his commitment to a TWO-STATE SOLUTION, as he outlined in his Bar-Ilan speech, right after Obama became Presidemt.

Netanyahu has been on the news in the days after the election re-affirming his support for a Two-State Solution per this Bar-Ilan speech.

As for me, I’ve been a very long time supporter of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, going back to the Clinton Days. I support Netanyahu 100% in his policies and actions!

This relates to that one small party who says that they will not join Netanyahu in forming the new government (which would make Netanyahu short of the required amount) unless Netanyahu renounces his long-standing support for the TWO-STATE SOLUTION per his Bar-Ilan speech of years ago.

I understand that Lieberman, of Yisrael Beytenu, is expecting to get the Defense Ministry, but that would still mean 60 seats, enough to form a coalition. What other party is sitting on the fence? Also, hadn't Herzog ruled out a unity government with Likud?

I am not questioning your statements. I have been out of the loop for the last 24 hours, with my son running in a 200 mile relay race, so I have probably missed something. Oh, Lord, please, no unity with Zionist Union!

It’ll be weeks of wrangling over Cabinet portfolios. Every one wants the power ministries.

The government will be on vacation during Passover week, so things will be put off for awhile.

Kulanu is still on the fence.

If all the other natural partners recommend Netanyahu, he’ll have 57 seats, 4 short of a majority.

Kulanu is the key to sealing the deal.

Thanks! I didn’t realize that Moshe Kahlon has not accepted the Finance Ministry yet!

Good for Bennet! But we need him in this government, to make sure Bibi does not drift to the left!

No.

This is the time smaller parties have leverage to get their demands met.

Once they enter the coalition, its extremely difficult for them to leave without facing new elections, which they do not want.

Sixty seats is one short. Majority needed.

Last government took about seven weeks to put together. Not a good place for short American attention spans.

The following is in the Wikipedia entry for Kulunu: “Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly offered Kahlon the post of Finance Minister (as well as portfolios for others) in the next government if he agreed to a joint ticket with Likud, but Kahlon declined. Nevertheless, on the day of the Israeli election, 17 March, 2015, Likud admitted to having forged a recording of Kahlon promising to support Netanyahu, which was distributed to voters the night prior. Calling the forgery “criminal”, Kahlon asked for an investigation by the election committee.”

I wonder if there is any truth to it.
