This phrase became a rallying cry for Ferguson residents, who took to the streets to protest the fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer, Darren Wilson. Witness accounts spread after the shooting that Brown had his hands raised in surrender, mouthing the words Dont shoot as his last words before being shot execution-style. The gesture of raised hands became a symbol of outrage over mistreatment of unarmed black youth by police.
That narrative was called into question when a state grand jury could not confirm those testimonies. And a recently released Department of Justice investigative report concluded the same.
Yet the gesture continues to be used today. So we wanted to set the record straight on the DOJs findings, especially after The Washington Posts opinion writer Jonathan Capehart wrote that it was built on a lie. From time to time, we retroactively check statements as new information becomes available. In this case, the Justice Department has concluded that Wilson acted out of self-defense, and was justified in killing Brown.
Does Hands up, dont shoot capture the facts of Browns shooting? What has it come to symbolize now? The Facts
Hands up, dont shoot links directly to Browns death, and it went viral. After the shooting, St. Louis Rams players raised their hands as a symbolic gesture entering the field before a football game. Protesters chanted Hands up, dont shoot during rallies after a state grand jury decided not to indict Wilson in Browns killing. The phrase and gesture were on signs, T-shirts, hashtags, memes and magazine covers. It even has its own Wikipedia page.

Way to close the barn door after the cow fled and got slaughtered, WaPoS.
After months on throwing fuel on the fire, the WaPo decides to “fact-check”? Too little, too late. I’ll be impressed when they run a story on the white girl in Mississippi who was burned alive by some “teens”.
It’s what the SJW’s want.
No sale.
Whoa! Who knew the Washington Post was RACIST!!!
I’m just amazed at how RACIST the Washington Post has become! Any disagreement with a liberal is RACISM. Any introduction of facts into an argument is RACISM.
Dorian Johnson started the “hands up” lie.
The damage is done and the left is to blame along with every agitprop in the media.
Way too late to dissolve this myth.
US Media has no credibility.
In AUGUST St Louis radio reported that Dorian Johnson recanted
The damage has already been done. Does any one here believe that these LIBERALS, SOCIALISTS and COMMUNISTS will spend any time in trying to explain why they did it? Please, once they have done the damage, they’ll be going for the next lie, and the next. Their plan is to overwhelm us with one lie after another. They have this “LIAR IN CHIEF” that will start the lie, and they know that there is no opposition on the other side. No one, in the other side, has the “EGGS” to call the “LIAR IN CHIEF” a “LIAR”.
close the barn doors? they brought the cans of gas and then handed the torches to others...
They had to keep the lie going until the t-shirts were all sold.
