Livni forgoes rotating premiership with Herzog [Israel Elections]

Zionist Union’s No. 2 drops bombshell 12 hours before election; Netanyahu, Herzog accuse each other of ‘panicking’.

The Zionist Union’s Tzipi Livni announced Monday evening that she would give up the rotation of the premiership with the slate’s leader, Isaac Herzog, an agreement the two made months ago when her Hatnua party merged with his Labor Party.

In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the party was “panicking,” while Yesh Atid party leader Yair Lapid and Jewish Home party leader Naftali Bennett said the move indicated the Zionist Union was planning to form a unity government with Netanyahu’s Likud. That claim was subsequently rejected by Herzog as “claptrap.”

The bombshell came 12 hours before polling stations were set to open, in an apparent last-ditch effort to garner additional votes.

Livni said the rotation agreement ought not interfere with her party’s main task: replacing Netanyahu’s Likud party.

In a response to the announcement, Netanyahu told Channel 2 that the decision reflected the Zionist Union’s “panic” — an accusation echoed by Herzog, who in turn said Netanyahu was the one “panicking.”

Well, in plain English, getting Tzipi Livni out of the rotating Prime Minister position broadens his appeal to the general electorate (not to those on the right, though). AND, it allows Herzog to be able to potentially pull in other smaller parties to get enough seats to form the government.

The bottom line is that Netanyahu or Likud doesn’t want to see this happen (it has, though) and thus ... they are mad about it.

>>In 1980, I distinctly remember that Reagan states were true blue and Carter states were red.

They were. The Democrats realized the country was identifying them with their intellectual brothers, the communists.

The first time that you’ll hear anything will be after 10 PM on Tuesday night, Israel time. That’s when polls close. There might be some indication from exit-polling at that time. It might be after midnight Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, Israel time, before you get any indications of who won.

solidify it, not crack it. . . Tzipi the Pinhead . . . government won't be drained of all testosterone.

You get an award for high metaphors per sentence in your post.

Thank you. We do try. I just wanted to point out that "Tzipi the Pinhead" is a metaphor, but its use as metaphor was unconscious on my part. I was alluding to a comic strip that ran in the Village Voice when I lived in NYC B.M.K. (before marriage and kids). The Voice is a Communist paper that later became a homosexual Communist paper, and soon a free paper, because people stopped buying it. But I used to read it the way some little boys intentionally smell their dog's breath once in a while—it's fascinating how bad it is.

Zippy the Pinhead is a guy in clown suit with a cone-shaped head (this was before SNL's Coneheads), who appears to be from another planet, loves things like strip malls and neon signs, and says nonsensical things. Bartlett's says that Zippy was the first character in literature to ask, "Are we having fun yet?" I'd say that's an achievement.

But as Cassius might have said, it was but dog's breath to me.

Someone wrote that Israeli leftists calling themselves the Zionist Union is like Democrats calling themselves the Capitalist Party.

Israeli leftists calling themselves the Zionist Union

It's also like the Democrats being called "Liberals" (means lovers of liberty). We're in the surreal world of Orwell's 1984.

I didn’t realize I said that on an earlier post. Sorry for repeating myself.
