Crimea's [Head Of Republic] But Mr Aksyonov denied that Russia had done anything wrong.

Sergei Aksyonov said the annexation of the peninsula by Russia one year ago had been a "democratic act".

"I can tell you that no-one took anything," he told the BBC's John Simpson.

"That was the choice of the Crimeans. Nothing could happen without the support of the local population which is why this was not an act of aggression, but a real democratic act.

"This is the main mistake and misunderstanding of Western leaders. People are misinformed by the media which is failing to give an accurate picture of what happened last year in Crimea."

Mr Aksyonov defended President Putin's actions over Crimea, saying the Russian leader had been faced with a choice - protect the population of Crimea or abandon them to Ukrainian nationalists.

"I believe his decision was the right one. And this decision was not taken before the New Year, nobody interfered with the internal politics of Ukraine. I would have made exactly the same decision as he did." has told the BBC the peninsula has returned to its historical Russian homeland and will never again be part of Ukraine.

It was indeed the choice of Crimeans. If the local population wanted to remain in Ukraine, they would have stayed.

The Maidan changed everything for themselves and under the circumstances, reunification with Russia was the only realistic option.

As we look back at the events of March 16, 2014, we really this is one of those dates on which history was truly made.

It was part of the Ukraine (kind of) for 60 years. For centuries it was passed around

It was always a predominately Russian-speaking territory and it has a pride of place in Russian history and culture.

For Russians, Crimea’s return to the motherland is a closed subject.

There's a lot of folks kidnapped, arrested, tortured and murdered in Crimea who would probably disagree with you.

A Russian FSB agent followed by men weilding grenade launchers and machine guns walking into the Crimean Rada and declaring himself "Prime Minister," followed up by a vote supervised by armed soldiers with pre-filled out ballots, and defended with repression, book burnings, and ransacking of people's homes and businesses for no other reason than not worshipping Putin, is not exactly consistent with the idea of a "Free-will choice to become a Russkie hell hole."

The Maidan changed everything for themselves and under the circumstances, reunification with Russia was the only realistic option.

Realistic option for who? Only for Putin who wants to dominate all his neighbors, and probably the world too if he could get away from it.

The Reconquista is well under way and El Jefe Jeb has informed us the adult thing to do is to accede to it.

Its a national holiday in Russia.

Crimea has its difficulties but its better than remaining in a bankrupt Ukraine.
