Recently the Houston Chronicle took Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, the chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Space, Science, and Competitiveness, to task for an alleged inattention to the needs of NASAs Johnson Spaceflight Center. More recently, Cruz found himself in a sparring match with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden over the question of whether Earth science is being funded at the space agency at the expense of its core mission of space exploration. Friday, Cruz took to the pages of the Houston Chronicle to explain himself further.
Along with the standard references to President John F. Kennedy, Cruz offered general support for both space exploration, in particular the Orion spacecraft and the heavy-lift Space Launch System, and commercial space, particularly the need for commercial spacecraft to replace the Russian Soyuz to allow Americans to access the International Space Station. He maintained that both of these parts of the NASA budget tends to benefit JSC, which resides south of Houston. Therefore, by supporting space exploration and commercial space, Cruz is supporting NASAs Johnson Spaceflight Center, and the criticism by the Chronicle is misplaced.

In this case, "Earth science" is code for "global warming scams". Don't we have other agencies fleecing the American public for this? NASA is what it stands for, space exploration.

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of attempting to find evidence of global warming. No single space project in this period will be more boring, or more unimportant for the long-range exploration of space." ... said Pres. Kennedy, never.

What percentage of NASA’S budget goes to earth sciences?
