Does the author of this not know the difference between 'formerly' and 'formally'?So you don't think that the author meant 'formerly' as in 'at a former time'? I think that is exactly what was meant....

If he meant "at a former time" the grammar was not correct.
"Formerly staged" means staged previously but not any more (the status of the photos having changed).
"Earlier staged photos" or "old staged photos" would be closer to what you're inferring as to the intended meaning.

I agree with you, but my 10th grade english teacher would have told me that the use of the word “fomerly”, which might be technically correct, is awkward. Just write “previously.”
Just two cents from a horrible writer.
