Tom Cotton picked apart by Army general over ‘mutinous’ Iran letter
WASHINGTON POST ^ | 13 MARCH 2015 | JONATHAN CAPEHART

The open letter to the leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran signed by 47 senators and instigated by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) was a stunning breach of protocol. One so outrageous that my former colleagues at the New York Daily News dubbed the signers “traitors.” While it is indeed a slap in the face of President Obama and an affront to the presidency, I’m not sure I would go that far, especially since Cotton is an Army veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. So, I turned to retired Major Gen. Paul D. Eaton for perspective. He wouldn’t say Cotton and Co. were “traitors,” either. He had a better word.

“I would use the word mutinous,” said Eaton, whose long career includes training Iraqi forces from 2003 to 2004. He is now a senior adviser to VoteVets.org. “I do not believe these senators were trying to sell out America. I do believe they defied the chain of command in what could be construed as an illegal act.” Eaton certainly had stern words for Cotton.

if they applied military standards, which would include UCMJ, half the politicians in DC, and i am being generous, would be facing adultery charges.

most of DC is a bunch of self-centered gutless, spineless bastards who may not hate America but certainly put their own self interest above the nation.

This guy was an Army general? If so, we are far worse off than I thought, because a senior commander who thinks Congress is in the military chain-of-command, subordinate to the president, is an ignoramus.

I might add if Eaton’s point of view is shared by a majority of the top brass, we are in more trouble as a nation than we realize.

What if Obama or any President gave an order to take control of a “ mutiny” on Capitol Hill? What’s to stop them?

At which point, it will be too late. Boehner and McConnell could have stopped it. We all know how that turned out. They handed control of Congress to the Executive Branch.

It always amazes me how a military guy can side with Obama. Although I suppose some of these higher ups are more like bureacrats rather than military.

I bet this guy has the same “wish” that obama has when he made that quip at some dinner about how he wished that Congress had to just do what he told them to do.

Of course obama has gotten pretty close with his executive orders and our spineless leaders.

“I do believe they defied the chain of command”

Perhaps this star studded dolt does not know this but the legislative branch is not in the chain of command of his imperious leadership. Well, perhaps there are some in a chain of sorts with Bath house Barry but not the chain of command the general envisioned in making this outrageous comment.

You clearly know Paul Eaton far better than I. I know him only slightly from when he was a Captain and then by reputation as he moved along the professional path. I thought him to be an ambitious idiot for the most part, but no great danger to the Republic. Ambition, in my view, has directed his course since he retired.

Your intimate acquaintance with him would, of course, trump my feeble observations. This remains one of the great aspects of Free Republic, the geniuses of the world school us daily.

I simply had an opinion. You insisted you knew better. Over and over. All to the defense of this jackass MG based on nothing more than your opinion. That clearly shows how passionate you were to defend him. That is not an opinion it’s a fact it’s written in your posts.

After retiring from the Army in 2006 Eaton was a frequent guest on various media outlets, where he often criticized the Bush administration’s prosecution of the Iraq War. In 2007, Eaton appeared in a political ad for VoteVets.org, similar to the ones prepared by John Batiste. [1] Eaton asserted that President Bush did not heed the advice given by his military commanders.[citation needed] Eaton appeared on Bill Maher’s talkshow and spoke out strongly against those who launched the Iraq war. In 2008 Eaton served as an advisor to Senator Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Following Clinton’s concession of the Democratic primary, Eaton has made several appearances in support of Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.
