Politics, sensitivity lead India to rush to ban books, films

NEW DELHI (AP) — A British documentary. A YouTube comedy clip. A book on Hinduism. Each offended some segment of Indian society, and each was banned or suppressed as a result.

Over the last year, at least two books and two films have become off-limits in India. "The Satanic Verses" has been forbidden since the 1990s. And the film censor board has issued a list of unacceptable words.

India is the world's largest democracy and has made huge economic leaps in the last few decades to become a key Asian power. And yet, as its official and unofficial bans show, this country of 1.2 billion continues to grapple with a complex tangle of deep sensitivities and a political process that is deeply influenced by religious and caste loyalties.

"Religious communities, ethnic groups, historical figures are all off-limits," says Shiv Vishvanathan, a social scientist at O.P. Jindal Global University. "The state is electorally subservient to any ethnic or religious group that throws a tantrum."

Hard to defend, but such things have touched off violent riots there in the past.

And this is different in principle from what goes on in the U.S. how?

I remember fifty years ago when Hindus and moslems were slaughtering each other because the moslems claimed a Hindu had stolen one of the hairs of the prophet MO from some holy site.

False. I have studied and written about these issues for a number of years. Indian security forces have murdered over 250,000 Sikhs since 1984, according to figures compiled by the Punjab State Magistracy and human-rights organizations. These figures were published in The Politics of Genocide by Inderjit Singh Jaijee. India has also killed over 200,000 Christians since 1947 and tens of thousands of Untouchables as well as indigenous tribal peoples in Manipur, Assam and elsewhere.

The Indian government has also targeted Christians. They have been victims of a campaign of terror that has been going on since Christmas 1998. Churches have been burned, Christian schools and prayer halls have been attacked, nuns have raped, and priests have been killed. Missionary Graham Staines and his two sons were burned alive while they slept in their jeep by militant Hindu members of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), the parent organization of the ruling BJP. Now his widow is being expelled from India. All over India, there have been laws made against converting from Hinduism to Christianity or any other religion.

So your claims prove false. I'm certain the well-known Indian Christian leader Dr. Joseph D'Souza or Persecuted Church wouldn't agree with your assertions. Nor would any of the Sikh leaders I know.

Keep spinning.

Well, yes it is. A democracy is where the voting majority can do as it pleases.

The US originated as a constitutional republic, not a democracy.

India’s supposed to be a republic, too. Only on paper.

Well documented figures from The Politics of Genocide, reporting numbers from the Punjab State magistracy. In fact, former Member of Parliament S.S. Mann goes even further, saying that a million Sikhs have been killed since 1982.

You had Operation Bluestar, the Delhi massacres, and tens of thousands of extrajucicial killings.

As I said, I worked on these issues for many years and I know what's going on over there.

So you had Catholics in the Cabinet. Big fat hairy deal. That doesn't change the oppression of Christians.

The Indian regime considers anyone who peacefully asks for independence a “terrorist”. People had a march in Punjab, made speeches, raised the Sikh flag, and 35 people were arrested.

During Operation Bluestar, children were taken out in the courtyard of the Golden Temple and asked if they supported Khalistan. When they answered with “Sat sri Akal”, they were brutally shot to death. The Sikh holy books were shot full of bullet holes by the Indian forces.

If someone were invading your holiest site, wouldn’t you fire back?

“We thanked to Soviet union for this for giving us advice and even their secret agency like KGB for coordinating with Indian army”

The Soviet Union? There is a strong recommendation. I suppose you got lessons in secularism and democracy from them too.

“Today Punjab has highest per capita income”

Yet somehow, according to the farmers’ organization, the farmers are starving, unable to make any money, and committing suicide at a high rate. The reason is that they are forced to sell their crops below market value and forced to buy supplies above market rates.

“well this is a hindu majority country”

Which, I suppose, in your mind, justifies the murders of Christians, Sikhs, Assamese, Bodos, Dalits, etc.

One of the ruling party’s leaders was quoted as saying that everyone who lives in India must either be Hindu or subservient to Hindus.

“I worked with many americans and I know how blacks are treated back there, they feel India more like home than their own country.”

That is a completely unjustified picture of America. If you actually knew anything about our country, you would know better.

Take your Communist, anti-American, Hindu militant garbage to a leftist site where it might be appreciated.
