I know that being Black does not shield me from attacks for being a Conservative that supports the message of the Tea Party to the hilt. One thing that I do find intriguing is the fact that most of the people involved here are white:

People — mostly white people — pay hundreds of dollars each to attend the multiday conference each year.

This compulsion for self-flagellation is reminiscent of the famous quote from Spiro Agnew,

A spirit of national masochism prevails, encouraged by an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals.
