Based on what factual info? Usually, the caibre of the round is why they call pistol or rifle.

Needs much more info before it's remotely believable.

They did not find the gun. They found some cartridge casings which were for pistol rounds, and from that assumed that the shooter used a pistol. Since there are rifles which shoot pistol calibers, that may an unwarranted assumption.

You also have kits which turn a Glock pistol into a scoped carbine rifle.
