Hillary Clinton: "I thought using one device would be simpler; obviously it hasn't worked out that way"
Hillary Clinton has told reporters she used private emails out of "convenience" during her time as secretary of state.
But Mrs Clinton said it "would have been better" to have two accounts to separate work and personal emails.
The issue of whether Mrs Clinton breached federal records rules has gained attention as she is expected to announce a run for president.
She is seen as a top contender for the 2016 Democratic nomination.
Mrs Clinton had planned to spend March talking about women's issues - including at a UN speech on Tuesday - before announcing her candidacy in early April, the Associated Press news agency reported.
But she decided to answer questions on Tuesday amid criticism from Republicans and worries from Democratic allies that she was not explaining herself.
At a news conference after Mrs Clinton made a speech at a UN session on empowering women, she told reporters why she set up a private email system during her time as secretary of state.
"I thought using one device would be simpler; obviously, it hasn't worked out that way," she said.
Under US federal law, officials' correspondence is considered to be US government property.
Mrs Clinton said she and her lawyers made the decision over what would be considered personal email when the state department asked for records from former secretaries of state.
The emails deemed personal were about half of the 60,000 emails in total she sent during her time in office.

Was she “our” employee or someone elses?
Of who? The Russians?
Do da name Charlie ring a bell?
I looked quickly at that photo...it looked like Helen Thomas down there in gray at the podium!
Convenience for Hillary = a way to solicit (ahem) contributions from foreign nations she dealt with as Secretary of State to the Clinton Global Initiative.
Me, I liked the comment about no classified documents sent or received.
She’s the Secretary of State, for crying out loud. Most of what she emails is classified by definition until determined otherwise.

WASHINGTON (AP) How Hillary Rodham Clinton’s statements about her exclusive use of private email instead of a government account as secretary of state compare with the known facts:
CLINTON: “Others had done it.”
THE FACTS: Although email practices varied among her predecessors, Clinton is the only secretary of state known to have conducted all official unclassified government business on a private email address. Years earlier, when emailing was not the ubiquitous practice it is now among high officials, Colin Powell used both a government and a private account. It’s a striking departure from the norm for top officials to rely exclusively on private email for official business.
___
CLINTON: “I fully complied with every rule I was governed by.”
THE FACTS: At the very least, Clinton appears to have violated what the White House has called “very specific guidance” that officials should use government email to conduct business.

Can you imagine the howls of outrage if
Condoleeza Rice had done this???
Imagine G W Bush saying he didn’t realize it.
And they say there is no bias in the media.
The real reason she don’t want the server turned over.. Bill. lol
He only emailed twice.. or say he says..
My question now is, "Where the hell exactly is the server located???????"
There is the whole press conference.
Come on. Aint one of them works for “us”.
This was embarrassing for her. I mean, she couldn’t keep her lies straight even with the cue cards. It’s shameful. And to think people wanted her for president. Absolutely shameful
She broke the law deliberately.
Big shock.
2. She set up her own mail server!! Translation: this is not just private email; this is a private server where she controls the content.
The thing is, there's no reason to do it unless you want the ability to hide things. With all of the money going to the Clinton Foundation, there's plenty to hide.
