THE UNs conclusion that Australia exposes asylum-seekers to torture or inhumane treatment was reached after accepting the claims of activists without hearings or independent investigation of the facts, and was based on the lack of detailed rebuttal from the government.
The report of the special rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment is based on the submissions of lobby groups such as the Australian Human Rights Law Centre and concludes: In the absence of information to the contrary, the rapporteur concludes that there is substance in the allegations presented.

When the new report emerged this week, finding that aspects of Australias asylum-seeker policies had breached the international convention against torture, Tony Abbott said Australians were sick of being lectured to by the international organisation.
I really think Australians are sick of being lectured to by the United Nations, particularly given that we have stopped the boats and by stopping the boats, we have ended the deaths at sea, the Prime Minister said.
The most humanitarian, the most decent, the most compassionate thing you can do is stop these boats because hundreds, we think about 1200 in fact, drowned at sea during the flourishing of the people-smuggler trade under the former government.

Only rich, predominantly white nations can be criticised.
What makes it even more galling in that, in so far that there are issues, they were created in the six years that the Labor Party was in power and the UN was more or less silent. It only becomes an issue to be criticised when a conservative government is elected, and can't fix the mess instantly.
When reading criticism of Western countries one can safely stop when they see “United Nations”,safe in the knowledge that to the UN all suffering, all death, all oppression, all injustices are the work of countries in which English is the predominant language.
What about torture in Cuba? Saudi Arabia? Iran?
In upside down world, if you adopt policies that encourage 100s of people to drown at sea, you are a humanitarian nation.
If you stop that policy and prevent 100s of people from drowning, you are an evil guilty white racist nation.
